Recommend a new motor

Issac Hunt (Elite) posted this on Thursday, 22nd May 2003, 17:53

My missus is ditching her rip-off company car (Fiesta) and buying one for ourselves.
I don`t drive so I know nowt about these sort of things.
So what is a good basic(ish) five-door hatchback to go for? (and what to avoid!)

Can recommend a Fiat Punto. Six and half grand new on the road, power steering, immobiliser, dual airbags, electric windows and so on. Can`t complain for that money, missus loves hers. Had it 2.5 years with barely any problems.

How mutch are you looking to spend and is it going to be a new (or newish reg).
I drive seat`s and skoda`s for a living and i wouldnt hesitate to recomend either.
Are you looking for a Diesel or petrol?.
Seat do a nice diesel turbo 1.9 ibiza and a pretty good 1.2 and 1.4 petrol. Both are good priced for the car.(not sure of the prices ) but i think the deisel is around 9995 new and the petrol is about 7995 but dont quote me on that as i dont deal with the retail side of things.

Skoda do a nice Fabia 1.9 deisel turbo and 1.2 fabia petrol both priced really well too.(won car of the year award).
Also the Skoda Octavia 1.9 tdi is a good car to go for.
Personally i wouldnt touch the petrols because i love deisels and they are becoming quicker than petrol with a fuel consumption petrols cant match.

It all depends on what you want or can afford to pay.

The other thing to remember is that both makes of vehicals are made by VOLKESWAGON so you are really getting one of them for a cheaper price its just the badge that makes a deciding factor.

Give them a test drive and go from there. I am sure you wont be dissapointed by the deisel models(especially the 130bhp models)

Happy car hunting.

As good as the later Skoda`s are supposed to be, and the fact that they`re now owned by Volkswagen, you are not driving one.

Mind you, when I drive off in my Focus tommorrow, can I say it`s really an Aston Martin or a Jag?

VW`s are great. I have a 5-door Polo and it`s the best small car I`ve ever driven. If I had the money I`d definitely get a Golf!

Fords are easy to get parts for and cheap to repair because the parts can be found all over the place ( dropped of the car along the road...lmao)......

Actually i am only kidding....

Personaly i dont like fords, was put off them along time ago when a friend lent me his.
I am sure they are good motors but not to everbodies taste.( well not mine anyhow)

well I know what you mean about parts dropping off, after all doesnt ford stand for Fix Or Repair Daily? However the Focus is an excellant car but not in the same league as a Golf any mk or the new seat Leon which is GTi quick for 1.4s money.
