Page 1 of SKY QUESTION?
General Forum
Thinking of getting it and was wondering about this interactive bit where your phone line has to be connected.
What activities on digital require the use of the phone line and how do i know if and when charges are being made to my phone bill.
I have just moved into a new house who has left Sky dish and box and i am able to watch interactive programmes and play certain games for free without having it attached to the phone line.
By the Way is i was to Get a new SKY installation for the free box and dish, what would they do about the dish and cables that already exist. Surely they are mine and the offer entitles me to a New MiniDish??
Also where the sky dish cable is in the living room is in the wrong place for where we want the tv, so sky should do this as well or can i extend it myself.
Any help , thanks, Col.

Before going online the digibox makes a clear statement that the procedure requires to connect, it tells you what the cost will be and asks if it should proceed. Shopping, some games, ordering pizzas etc all require connection.

Unless you took the dish down, hid it and the digibox I would very much doubt it.

Sky would do it if they agreed to install, but there`s nothing to install if you already have dish / box. Sure you can extend it yourself.
Had this problem a couple of times when moving.
Firstly, the interactive thing - you don`t need to be plugged in to the phone line. Have had ours unplugged for around six months now, no problems.
Second, do not ring Sky for the install. they are useless. They usually have a long waiting list and just give you a day, no indication of time, so you end up sitting in the house waiting. Once, they didn`t even turn up to a mate`s house, didn`t ring till gone 6pm on a Saturday to tell him. Lets just say he wasn`t amused.
Go through the yellow pages and find a local Arial guy, he can come round and give you a quote, move things around etc. Has all the same deals as Sky anyway, as that`s where he gets it from!
My Sky Box has been connected to the phone line for about 3 minutes in the past 3 years. Normally its only when you have to pay for something. But yes, you are advised of any charges on screen before(and if) you do so.
As far as new installation is concerned I`m sure you`d be entitled to new dish & cables etc. I`m sure installation bloke would say you may aswell stick to existing set up(make job easier for him)but you just need to insist you want it new. Same with internal cabling - you tell him where you want it.

Same with internal cabling i tryed when i moved and they would not change it for me as they tested it and it was working ok. you dont get anything new of sky if they are replacing something as my box packed in and when then guy came out he instaled an old recon box so if ya dish and cable is ok just leave it its less hassle.
So you think i should just hide the digi-box and say the previous owners took it??
Wouldn`t i be better off with a new dish and cables?? especially as they are currently in the wrong place in the front room, OR would the sky installer put some sort of extension on it to reach the other side of the room?
What if i didn`t get a NEW dish and in 6 months or even 2 years time the old one knacked up! Surely then i would be left having to pay for a new dish and regretting the fact that i never got a new one put up.
Even if i have a dish surely the offer entitles me to a dish as well as a new box!! Even if it eas just a spare.
What do you reckon? COL
You never own a sky box and dish they are always the property of sky so ifthey break in 6 months you will still be entitled to get a replacement.

But surely if you where one of the first people to get Sky digital and you had to pay for the Sky box, it then belongs to you? Then if you move home you can use it as a second reciever if you have a new system installed?? I would like to know this as i`m about to move house, i intend on leaving the dish but the box i paid for, so it`s coming with me. :D
I was under the impression that the dish and box were your own property as part of the installation deal cost.
If you break the contract in the first 12 months i was led to believe they could charge you extra for the costs of the eqipment supplied (or perhaps take it off you in this scenario but unsure about this).
But the box surely doesn`t remain the property of sky.
