"Stealth taxes" - How many more in the pipeline ?

Fitz (Elite) posted this on Tuesday, 19th August 2003, 18:30

Just read about yet another government so called "stealth tax". This time, the DVLA is proposing to increase the registration tax on new cars by some 50%. OK not everyone buys a new car every day, but everyone needs somewhere to live. For instance here in Wales, every property is going to be reassessed for council tax banding. "It won`t necessarily increase your council tax bill" they say, "It will even out the council tax burden" - yeah right ! The government both local and central must regard Joe Public as some sort of cash cow.

How many more "stealth taxes" to come one wonders ?

No sympathy for the car buyers. I am happy to pay the extra for the occasional time i may buy a new car in my lifetime, it will only hit people that buy a new car every 6 months, and if they can afford that, they can afford a bit more tax. The council tax rebanding doesn`t always mean that you will be paying more tax, the people that get hit hardest will be those that have made the biggest windfalls on their property prices, buying at £80k and now being worth £220k and the like..... There should be more taxes on people buying houses as investments, it stops some of us from being able to afford a home.. >:(

Excellant idea.
In some areas, people are unable to buy their first home due to the activities of the buy to let brigade. They cause the prices to rise above the affordability of first time buyers, and these same first time buyers are then forced to rent - more often than not from the buy to letters, thus they are lining the pockets of the people who are in effect denying them from getting their first home.
I suggest selling a buy to let property is made subject to a high capital gains tax. On top of this, these properties should be subject to business taxes, not normal council tax.
Lastly, the Tories once won an election by promising the "Right to buy" off the council. Labour could do the same by granting the right to buy to the tenants of private landlords.

That should be enough to curb this selfish behaviour. The "me me" attitude of the buy to letters is disgraceful.

What about first time buyers who buy a house at the now vastly inflated prices, then get stung when the council tax rises again? They`re hardly getting a windfall, especially as house prices seem to be stabalising a little round our way. I currently pay £91 per month in council tax for a semi detatched house in a fairly unsavoury part of Bristol. This is based on the house being in `Band B`. I paid £67K for the house back in November, which although excessive for the area, is fairly cheap for Bristol. However, I would feel extremely annoyed if I was forced to pay more money for the same house, especially as the council are about as useful as a chocolate teapot (national average of missed bin collections per 100,000 is 173.1 - Bristol is 1,279! And yes, they did `forget` to empty mine this week). I pay enough bloody money on the house, taxes, bills etc, and I definitely do not want an increase. The council actually asked the people to vote on whether we wanted an incease this year, or stagnation at the cost of additional services. The overwhelming majority voted for no increase but, guess what? Yes, that`s right, a 9.3% increase from last year appeared!

F*** taxes, and f*** Bristol City Council!

Stealth Tax......... WHO voted Labour, hang your head in SHAME!!!

Stealth Tax + Labour = A bunch of greedy barstards!

The one thing that gets my goat is its now a fact of life, we will always get shafted. I worked 35 hours overtime last month, (few extra pennies) that sort of thing, total wages worked out at about £1150 only to have £450 of that taken in tax! Labour`s way of thanking the hard workers of the UK. Makes me sick!

The Shi*house poet needs a good thrashing, Grafitti ISNT cool.... kiddies!
