Car Hire in the US. Any advice ?

SIXFINGERS (Elite) posted this on Tuesday, 26th August 2003, 18:08

I`m looking to hire a car from California in October, can anyone recommend a reputable company and advise me regarding the extra insurance available. Looked like a had a good price with Thrifty ( £218 ) for a lux car but when I added the insurance it was touching £400. Waddya think ?
Cheers in advance. :/

Just come back from CA, and Dollar come recommended - used them 2 years running. However, make you sure you get in writing the time you can return the car, as they are a bit of a pain on this - if you have a late flight, ensure the drop-off time corresponds to this.

I can highly recommend booking through Skycars International Ltd (www.skycars.com or 08707897789). They are a UK company which use Budget car rentals in the USA. I paid approx. £220 for a weeks hire of a Convertible Ford Mustang, with 2 23 year old drivers, collecting in San Francisco and dropping of in Los Angeles. There were no additional insurance or young drivers payments to be paid. When we collected the car it had done less than 500 miles, 1 week and 1500 miles later it looked as though it had been driven through deserts, over mountains, along beaches and in snow and ice - which indeed it had.

I always use holidayautos.co.uk as it lets you pay over here and covers you for everything. The actual car hire has always been with alamo in the USA, and they are always pleasant, and said that they like holiday autos bookings as all the complicated paperwork is done! Have a look..

I`ve used Alamo a couple of times in the US without any hassles.

I once booked a car via Thrifty`s website to collect in Italy, and they completely lost the booking. They rented us a car ok, but at a substantially higher rate than the original booking. I`m not rushing to use them again!
