Car NumberPlate Crackdown

Colin Mac (Competent) posted this on Sunday, 31st August 2003, 12:07

Since 1/1/03 the DLVA have now issued a requirement that all number plate makers/suppliers shall be regestered with them and this means if you want a numberplate you have to show your logbook or V11 form.

This is to crackdown on falseplates.

Unfortunately the above will NOT work as:

Its for England & Wales only, so whats stoping you in Scoltand and Ireland.

There will be blackmarket punters anywhere in the UK who will make a set of plates for you, no questions asked.

Also you can still buy blank`s and the numbers and latters so as to be able to "make your own"

Or the crooks will just nick your number plates to save them having to make them up, as they did with mine.

When I reported it the police said that they`d had 50 sets of plates sloten over 48 hours, which was nice !!

Cheers,
Rich.

Didn`t know that as I believe Halfords and the like stopped selling them ages ago. Would be handy for me though if I could DIY as I need a plate for the trailer.

Worryingly, if all goes according to plan, we will soon have to get numberplates with chips in them, so our movements can be tracked! This new DVLA initiative looks like one small step towards that goal - force people to get `approved` plates, then force them to change to the new chipped ones.

No doubt our `sexed up` government will try to spin it as an anti-terror precaution, or some such guff. I shudder to think what this tracking information could be used for, and who might have access to it.

If they could get away with tagging people rather than cars, I`m sure they`d do that instead.

That latter idea wouldn`t be so bad, would get rid of everyone who goes to a Pop Idol audition for a start. :)

I think I`d need a longer extendy lead to walk the dog though...
