Who`s got an Ipod then?

Doug B. (Competent) posted this on Saturday, 13th September 2003, 17:19

Howdy folks,

I`m teetering on the brink of buying an Ipod but could really do with some pointers from anyone out there who has one as I don`t know anyone who`s got the little box.
- Are they really as fabulous as magazine reviews make them out to be or is it a case of style over actual useability?
- How easy is transferring MP3`s onto it? Will I have to rip my entire CD collection to my hard drive first before copying them onto the Ipod or can I rip straight to the thing itself?
- Am I right in thinking that there is some form of copy protection thing where you have to check tracks on and off the Ipod (i.e. each MP3 is either only on my PC or only on the Ipod?) or can I keep a copy of the file on the PC as well as on the Ipod?

Any advice from you Ipod owners out there would be much appreciated.

Hi matey!

I have a 15 GB Ipod and its excellent. The sound is very good, the earphones you get with the Ipod are OK, but I shelled out for some better sony ones.

It`s easy to use, easy to set up and easy to transfer songs to the thing.

I have songs on the Ipod and on my PC.

Do you have the old or new version of the iPod?

Hi,

I have the latest Ipod or Gen3.

Although the version I have is becoming obsolete as the 15GB version is not being done anymore, its going to be a 20GB.

I am tempted with the new 20gig, but...

How long does the battery last for? I see that it is quoted at 7 hrs, but I would imgine with real use that would be closer to 5 - is that accurate? If so, I can`t see the point in storing 20gig of music if you can only play 5 hours worth (no use for holidays etc).

Also, does the ipod act as a removable drive and allow you to upload songs back onto a PC?

I`m also on the lookout for a hard drive mp3 player, and not necessarily an Ipod. Projected battery life has actually come down in the newer models (plus I`m not sure if the battery is replaceable) and there is no line in for recording directly from your hifi system, - both the new Philips HDD100 and the iRiver iHP100 have a line in for doing this. iRiver is apparently a bit pricey, Philips software and loudness are apparently not what they could be and aftersales service hasn`t been initiated. I may go for iRiver if the price comes down. The Zen is another option, but, again, it has no line in for recording - i don`t want to have to keep turning on my PC every time i want to add a song to an mp3 player. They should do it like the minidisc system where you can record direct.

I think you can directly encode with the Ipod, but they have chosen not to publicise it because it is quite complicated.

I agree with the comments about the Iriver. It does every I`d like (except AM radio for the football results) but is £80 too expensive in my opinion.

Where`s the best place to buy them? I am very tempted. Carting Cd`s in my bag to away matches and uni is a pain.
