Page 1 of MIB - R1 1.38 vs R2 1.34
General Forum
Does anyone know if there IS any cuts to the forthcoming UK Men in Black DVD?? Surely not 4 minutes anyway...as a lot of sites refer to the US version as being 1 hour 38 long while ours will be 1 hour 34 long. Is it just a typo in the information given by the studio?
Thanks
Martin
RE: MIB - R1 1.38 vs R2 1.34
R2 discs tend to be somewhat shorter than R1 discs because of the frames per second thing
R1 run at 24 fps (like the movies) and R2 at 25 (ok, I know that`s a gross generalization but it`ll do for this discussion :)
So therefore we get slightly sped up films - some people with perfect pitch can hear the difference for example.
The difference is 4%
Therefore if the R1 film is 1hr 38 (98 mins) then the R2 should be 94 minutes.
Which it is :)
so no cuts.

Thanks a lot John, I thought a film like MIB wouldn`t warrant the same levels of cutting as Cannibal Holocaust....but the BBFC work in mysterious ways!
Thanks again for the explanation
Martin
Cinema runs at 24fps
NTSC runs at 30fps. via repeating frames (due to 60Hz power supply)
PAL runs at 25fps. via 4% speed up (due to 50Hz power supply)
As NTSC has a different frame rate due to repeating frame (6 per second) abd not by changing the speed, NTSC will always have the same run time as Cinema film.
PAL will always be 4% shorter than NTSC and Cinema due to the speedup.
Men in Black is not cut in the UK, but it does have dialogue substition, which is 2 uses of the work "prick" have been dubbed to "jerk".
If you ever want to check if a film is cut in the UK just go to the BBFC website ( http://www.bbfc.co.uk ) and do a search for the film.
