Skiing in Bulgaria

peteh (Competent) posted this on Monday, 12th January 2004, 09:04

Booked our first Skiing holiday yesterday to a place called Borovets in Bulgaria. Paid £309 for 7nights Half Board, £20 each for Ski Insurance and £93 each for a 6day learn to ski pack (which includes 6x4hr lessons Ski`s and Boot hire + Lift pass).

We`ve both had 3 ski lessons on the dry slopes at Gloucester which was great fun, but we were told that the real stuff is 3 times faster?

We chose Bulgaria as it`s meant to be cheap, not just for the holiday but also the food, beer etc. But also its meant to be good for beginners?

Anybody been to Bulgaria Skiing or even Borovets ?

Cheers

Pete

The last time i went was 96 with a few mates and it was excellent value, hotel food was not really up to much but outside the hotel the food was excellent and very cheap, beer was also cheap. Ski instructor was great Toddor i think his name was, he also had his own ski do and used to let us all take turns to drive round on it. We used to see him in the nightclubs so went drinking with him needless to say we were all rough on the following days!! The only problem was if there want much snow there was no snow machine so you used to have to go higher into the mountains, but so did everybody else. I couldnt ski when i was out there but picked it up fairly well as there are some very good beginner runs.

I went to Bulgaria about 9 years ago when it was mega cheap. We went to Pamporovo which isn`t quite as high up as Borovets but the Snow was ok. In fact our last day was Xmas and it belted it down with Snow. That is still the best days (and funniest...ie falling over in powder) skiing I have ever had. You should be ok being a beginner because there are very few challenging runs. I think you will enjoy skiing on proper snow much more than the dry slope (for a start it doesn`t hurt as much when you fall), its easier to turn and stop and is only marginally faster than dry. The biggest difference is being high up on a beautiful mountainside with the sense of real freedom that brings.

Hope you have a great first skiing holiday 8) (Lucky git...I can`t afford it this winter :( )
