Wife want an Ipod and I was thinking about getting her one for her Birthday. Dont know much about them at all. Does anyone know of any good deals or which is the best one to buy.
The new "little" one that`s launched today might be worth thinking about, although it`s not that much cheaper than the one that`s already around. There was a big feature about this on the radio this morning, and they were grilling one of the top guys at Apple Europe about why it costs considerably more over here. If bought in the US it would work out at about £160 (IIRC), and indeed by all accounts all Ipod/Apple stuff is better value there (especially given the current exchange rate) so it may be worth thinking going down that route, regardless of which one you buy...

There was a big article in the papers at the weekend about the battery life. Or lack of..
Because they`re `sealed` batteries i.e. part of the unit, you can`t replace them.
So, although they may boast of 20GB of space and hours of music, apparently you`re lucky to get about 2 hours after about a year.
There`s already a battery replacement programme in America and they`re trying to get one here..
Ste
Yes but the replacement battery costs US$99 and is gteed for 90 days only. Expect it to be £99 here which is outrageous for a battery!
best get a Zen then! :-)
60 GB for the same price as a 20GB Ipod! and removeable Lithium Ion batteries too!
I think I know whic I`ll be getting !

I got a 20GB model for Christmas and love it - well worth getting a sexy iPod, in my opinion. It breaks down like this:
[*]4GB - £160 - 1,000 songs (`Mini iPod`)
[*]15GB - £240 - 3,500 songs
[*]20GB - £299 - 5,000 songs
[*]40GB - £399 - 10,000 songs
The battery life is probably just under 8 hours, which can be a pain, but how long are you honestly away from your dock station for? Make sure your PC has a Firewire port as it comes with F/w only, although you can buy a USB 2.0 adaptor - I have F/w and it is quicker than USB 2.0, I think, transferring about a song per second.
The software it comes bundled with, iTunes, is fantastic. You can download a free copy regardless from here.

I would echo what Rik says. I have the 20GB model too and it is well worth it. Brilliant piece of kit.

Hey,
I got an iPod before xmas & I love it. Its a fantastic piece of hardware, but there are certain limitations which I found annoying as a PC user:
1- Most Pc`s dont come with a firewire port, which happens to be the only cable you get with the iPod. Firewire cards are about 45euro. You could opt for a USB2 cable but thats about 25euro and only works with Windows XP, not ME or 98. Also, Firewire cards can only work with Windows 98 Second Ed. and upwards.
2- iTunes (which is meant to be fantastic software) doesnt work on anything below Win XP. Others are left with Musicmatch jukebox, which you may have to download if you buy an iPod after last november... And to be honest , its not great.
3- Your mp3s must be perfectly tagged. This is just some advice for other pernickidy people like me as the iPod sorts everything by ID3 tags.
4- You cant use the newest version of the firmware for the iPod on anything below XP.
But despite these failings of the windows support, once you get everything on the iPod it works like a dream. It is also quite simply the sexiest looking piece of machinery ever created.
