Would this be Accidental Damage?

Evening`

Babies - don`t you just love them? ;) My little girl was sitting playing on my wifes lap whilst she was doing some work on her laptop - Then the baby promptly decided to vomit everywhere!! A lot of sick seeped into the keys and now the laptop works - but its acting as though the Alt key is held down. I`ve put it in the airing cupboard now to hopefully dry up any sick that might be casuing troubles. But if it doesn`t sort it then I wondered if this thing is classed as accidental damage on the home contents insurance? We really can`t afford a new lappy - and i`ve no idea how much summat like this would be to fix.

Any one able to help?

Kip

LOL, clever baby.

Seriously though, it`s worth a try as long as you have "accidental" cover.
Do laptop keys come off like regular keyboard keys? it may be a case of taking
the keys off and cleaning out the offending vomit?

indeed, accidental damage normally covers spilt drinks, so baby vomit should be included too. Plus it`s a lot more random than placing a drink near your keyboard, so I think `accidental` pretty much describes it

Depemds.....I have an Acer lappy and I spilled Lime Cordial over the keyboard. The left hand side of it froze and you couldn`t type - I had to cut and paste letters to write URL`s!!!

I am lucky enough to work with someone that has fixed Laptops before (he said "no worries, I`ll just take the keyboard out and wash it and dry it - that usually does the trick") but when he took the keyboard out, it turned out to be a secure unit ie: you can`t take the individual keys off as they are all part of one piece...if that makes sense..:-)

Again, as I am "lucky" :/ enough to work for an IT distributor, Acer were running a promo day in work and `phoned in to head office and got me a brand new keyboard sent out for nowt - thus avoiding the usual two weeks turnaround that I would normally expect for a repair job from any manufacturer! (I had the keyboard within 48 hours...

Just incase you are not covered, you should be able to do a pretty decent DIY repair.

First things first, disconnect the power and take the battery(s) off.

Look at the bottom of the keyboard just under the space bar/alt key area and you should see 2 or 3 notches cut out of the curcuit board. A small flat blade screwdriver inserted here lifts the keyboard out of the laptop. May need a little force to get it to un-clip

Don`t lift it to far as the cable, usualy a flat type, is very short so needs to be unplugged from the mother board. If the connector is a white one with the flat cable in the middle of it, then lift the 2 sides of the connector, it has an inner and outer part, as you lift, the outer part will move up and un-lock the cable.

You should then be able to give it a good clean and yes the buttons will come off so you can get into the nooks and crannies, don`t forget to make a note of where they all go for putting back, then let it dry out at least 12 hours in a warm room or airing cupboard.

All the best

Ger.

Don`t forget puke is acidic, so you need to get the machine stripped down and washed out ASAP.
