Guesstimates welcome. I`m sitting comfortably

Seems my combi boiler (ferroli 77 FF) has packed in :( - or at least the fan has so I can`t relight the pilot. Just spoke to someone whom I used to work with in British Gas(he`s an engineer - I`m not) and without having any figures quoted he reckons they`re not worth throwing money at(replacement fan) as their shelf life is around 10 yrs anyway(thats how old the boiler is) - bit sceptical hearing this but as shelf life of normal back-fire boiler is 20 yrs then suppose it makes sense(I`m sure he wouldn`t bull**it me anyway).
So, assumming he`s going to suggest a new combi boiler(supplied & fitted) what do you reckon the damage is going to be?
Pete

BTW he`s calling around tomorrow night.

I used to work for British Gas. I seem to recall the engineers being paid commision if they manged to get the consumer to buy appliances. I don`t know if this is the case nowadays but it worth bearing in mind. Perhaps it may well pay you to get a quote elsewhere. I can say with some certainty though that even as an employee with a 30% discount, I used to find it cheaper to go to suppliers other than British Gas!

i`d consider getting another quote and if it`s economical, i`d also get it PROPERLY serviced, this should extend it`s working life.

Hi Spaniel The guy doesn`t work for BG anymore(hasn`t for long time) he`s his own boss. He installed new boiler for my mother few years ago at a significant saving from what BG would have charged so I know what your talking about. My combi hasn`t been serviced for at least 5 years but it doesn`t seem that that`s the reason the fan has failed.
Pete

Am now taking off cover of combi to see if I can tamper with fan :/

If you need to get a new one, get a Worcester.

we have just had a back boiler and new baxi inset bb super put in , heating system updated to fully pumped (gravity feed b4) and it has cost us £2996.00.
We had quotes for a combi boiler and update the system and they were coming in around £1800.
Hopefully this gives you an idea on how much you may be looking at.
Just do what we did , ring around and get loads of quotes from companies, they are free after all.
Good Luck. :D

edit...The price of the fire was around £180 by the way.

I paid cash in hand for fitting a Worcester 24i and ten radiators. Including fitting it came to £1600, but I took up all the flooring myself.

If you are just getting the boiler fitted and already have the radiators, I wouldn`t pay more than a grand for a semi-decent boiler and fitting.

If you need/want new radiators and a new combi, Mr Central Heating (advertises in the papers) does the full lot including pipes for about £650 including delivery nationwide!

A lot of it probably depends on where you live geographicaly. I live in Newcastle, but I`m sure things like this would cost more in London.

**edit ** Mr Central Heating`s price doesn`t include fitting, you have to do that yourself.
