No qualifications, with a child...what to do?

LondonLee (Elite) posted this on Wednesday, 2nd June 2004, 20:39

Guys,

I`m asking on behalf of someone who is in need of help.
She has no qualifications, she has a very young child and is in one of them states where she feels that there is nothing she can do about her situation. She currently does modelling, but really wants to move away from this scene and into a proper work environment.

I said I`d look around for her but I myself haven`t found anything. Although I`m sure there is help out there. Do any of you know of a possible solutions?

What about childminding? If she already has a child its a good way to get company for hers and to be registered and recognised as a professional person.....can lead to many opportunities for her once little one is older and in school

There ought to be adult education places locally - they offer things like Life Skills (erm, brushing up on things like maths and english) and CLAIT (a computer thing). There`ll be a creche and it`s in the daytime.

I know someone who went to one and they had placement schemes with several companies for different kinds of work - the person I know ended up doing office work (clock cards) for Morrisons.

They`ll also have all the info there for college to do GCSEs A-Levels or other qualifications.

The course was free. I`m sure other people will know specific details for courses, but I just thought I`d say that there *is* stuff out there.

For a start try here. These guys usually know the score and can get your friend started in making out some sort of forward plan - setting some goals/deciding how they can be achieved etc. Adult education centres during the daytime, usually have creches that your friend can take advantage of.

Childcare is a serious problem when you`re starting out, but it can be sorted with help from family and friends. Convince her that she`s only on the lower rung of her trip up the ladder and all it takes to succeed (i.e. have a half-decent life) is focus & effort(and admittedly, a bit of luck).

Best of luck to her :)

I have an Idea but she would have to be pretty dim for it to work!
Ask her to stand as a Labour MP. After dizzy the immigration idiot quit they need someone to replace her!
Though she would need to be as stupid or more so than her predecssor!

Just kidding!

If she`s done modeling she could try asking the agency for day work, they usually employ models in the office too.
You could even try buyers for the store`s it requires no formal qualifications though it helps uf you`ve been a model!

She could go into carework if she has the patience. I don`t think you need qualifications for it but with some places you can do your NVQ`s while you work but it can be hard work!

What is her age? Once someone has left school, not having GCEs, A levels etc., are not a problem as for an adult entrant they are not required for many courses, as entry is based on an interview and whether or not they feel she can cope with the course. So she should not rule herself out of courses that would normally have required exam results.

She has already shown she has some life skills in having to manage her work life in taking care of appointments/money from modelling. So if she thinks she is a bit of a dummy, she should realise that just is not the case!
