candyman (Harmless) posted this on Saturday, 2nd September 2000, 11:51

Dear Anyone,
Please Help-----> I have a TV with the option of NTSC 4.43. I`m gonna buy a multi-region Sony S335 soon. Will I have any problem playing R1 NTSC Discs? Whats the deal with this NTSC 3.58 thing? I live in the Middle East. Thanx a lot!

One of them is a slightly better standard, I think one is used by japanese and the other USA.

My 5 year old sony supports both.

I believe the yanks use the old 4.38 so you may have trouble, but what I dont know, there is only aslight difference between the two standard so maybe the picture will be slightly different.

Then again it may not like it and churn out black & white!

Some one help this guy NOW!

From what I can tell

PAL has a subcarrier frequency of 4.43 (as used in the UK)

NTSC has a subcarrier frequency of 3.58 (as used in USA and Japan)

NTSC 4.43 is a partially converted NTSC signal, also known as PAL 60

Sony DVD Players tend to only output pure NSTC (3.58),
you could try your player in Scart RGB mode as that tends to bypass the tvs normal circuits and go direct to the tv tube and so shouldn`t cause any of the usual NTSC problems, but it all depends on your tv.

If that doesn`t work then you could get an analogue standards convertor (anout £70) as they convert NTSC - PAL 60 (NSTC 4.43)
