HELP.. Daughters Homework...

biggerjules (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Friday, 24th September 2004, 19:07

My daughters maths homework is driving us barmy, please can anyone help?
Either her teacher is trying to be clever by setting a task that is impossible to do or we are missing something, try to work this out
You have to make 24 from these four numbers 1,6,9,11.You can do this by any means only using each number once, please help

Any chance she`s copied it off the board wrong or something? 1,6,6,11 is easy, but the closest I can get to 24 with the 9 is:

11 / 6 = 1.83
1.83 + 1 = 2.83
2.83 x 9 = 25.47

hi
dont know how old ur daughter is but the only way i can solve 24 is
1. square the 6 ie(6x6) =36
2. Sqare root 9 = 3
3. divide 36/3 = 12
4. Add altogether 12+1+11= 24 8) 8) 8)

hope this helps!!!

What age range are we talking? Is it likely to be a miss copy as XfilesGurly suggest, or are we looking at powers, square roots etc?

A round of applause for DVD_SCORPION then!! :D:D:D

I thought each number could only be used once and 6 squared would be using 6 twice: like on Countdown, you can`t do it that way.

Is that last number definitely 11? not another 2 1`s?

then it becomes easy too, with
1+1=2x1=2
2x9=18+6=24

if you can use the numbers more than once as suggested, then there`s tons of ways to do 24...
..now I`m gonna get a headache! lol
