Page 1 of One Life - Gary Hart
General Forum
Anybody see this programme last night ? Gary Hart was the guy who caused the Selby train disaster (10 people were killed) - just couldn`t believe the inability of this guy to admit guilt. He seemed divorced from the reality that 10 people had lost their lives; and he had contributed/caused this. He kept on about the absence of retaining barriers close to the rail line - clutching at straws from what the media focussed on in the aftermath of the crash.
Claimed not to have fallen asleep at the wheel - while all evidence points to the contrary. The Land Rover went in a straight line down the field - anyone awake would have tried to `correct` its path. It annoyed the hell out of me ( just winced with what the victims must have felt watching it ) - that he was allowed time and again to portray himself ( and even his kids ) as victims.
If the BBC are going to do programmes such as this - at least ask pertinent questions -the interviewer never seemed to ask Hart to explain his reasoning or counter with the facts that had been proven in court.
I think most people would forgive an accident and an expression of guilt - but he`s in complete denial of the facts and it must be distressing to the injured/relatives/etc that he is allowed to `air` these thoughts to a national audience.

As a passenger on the Ladbroke Grove train crash I know how the passengers of the Selby one would have felt on watching that. Luckily for me I escaped with nothing more than whiplash - there were 35 people ( I think it was 35...it is 5 years ago now and the memory is lacking :/ ) who lost their lives, probably because a driver ignored the signal. Will we ever know for sure, no.
As for last night`s program, I can`t believe it was aired, but I suppose people are entitled to speak out about what happened (in their opinion). I can also see how the media affects our view on events - with tabloids blowing up various events and creating a sometimes slanted vision of what goes on. Unfortunately we all rely on information from sources that may sometimes add to/restrict the truth - and also on the ability (or lack of) of the human mind to recall things accurately.

I didn`t see the programme, but there`s also a knock-on effect from the ten people dying, all the other lives affected by it.
My nephew has ADHD (behaviour problems), and used to see a chap at the University of Teesside who was a specialist in this field and ran a group to help kids with ADHD. This chap died in the Selby train crash (on his way to a meeting in London I think), so all the kids who used to see him have lost a pioneer in his field, and the help he gave them.
Mark. :)
I saw this and thought the programme makers did a good job....in letting Hart show what an ar*ehole he is. He constantly referred to how `he` had been affected and how `he` had been punished. I think a simple admission and apology would have gone a long, long way to help the grieving families of the ten men killed.
The bit that really got me was when, looking at pictures of the crash scene, he said something about how much he missed the great car/van he had been driving/towing! I`d throttle him now for that statement alone regardless of his involvement, guilt or otherwise.

Did he really say that??? :o I missed it, but I remember watching the clips of it on the ad and thought how insensitive he was going on then. He sounds like he has no remorse for the consequences to his actions. :(
