Take a new car for a test drive.
Get off with 84mph in a 30 zone,130 in a 60 zone and 159 in a 70 zone....all on the car`s own video system.

As long as you`re a copper you are,according to the judge,"allowed to practice high speed driving on public roads".
Nothing about the fact he was alone and no instructor there.

We`d get jail.
They get a "fair enough,you can go".

Well, just to play devils advocate....
When i first read this i thought he had actually gone into a car showroom and then gone for a test drive and when he was caught he claimed he was testing the car under high speed driving conditions.

Since it`s a police car, and he was presumably on duty, i reckon it`s not quite as bad as first sounds.

I would hope that police officers undergo more strict driving tests than ordinary motorists so perhaps a higher speed limit for them is acceptable.

Having said that 159mph is awfully fast and does put people`s lives at risk.

Its another nail in the `public dont trust the justice system` coffin.

It was even argued that 100mph is considered unsafe even in an emergency situation.

I mean, what can you learn at nearly 160mph? How to go in a f***ing straight line? At that speed everyone is as dangerous as each other as by the time you react youve travelled a few hundred meters, no matter how much `training` youve had.

It really p***es me off. You have police chauffers and off duty officers breaking the traffic laws left right and center and nothing ever bloody happens.

And the judge even had the nerve to criticise the police force bringing the case for teaching him to drive that fast in the first place.

Yeh driving at 84mph in a 30 is alright if your a copper with an advanced driving leicence under your belt.

There`s no excuse for it.
None.
If we want to do those sorts of speed safely,we`re expected to go to race tracks.
They can do the same.
It gives you an idea of what the car can do without endangering the public.

I`ll tell you something else...
The police will,and do,harp on about their `superior driver training`.
Well let me tell you this.
The only difference between their driving and any other competent driver is the blue lights and sirens on top of the car.
Without those,they`re nothing special.

Its insane... Imagine being around when he had come flying up the street...
if you were halfway across the 30mph limit road when he came round the corner, you`d be half way up the street by the time he realised you were his new hood ornament.

I`m not a big driver, so I imagine that when you are doing 160odd miles an hour time slows down, you start getting younger, and the horizon just becomes a big white light.... As I say, I don`t know - I couldn`t do 160mph in my metro if i strapped two of them together..

Ok fair enough. My attempt at playing devil`s advocate wasn`t too convincing.

Try this though.

This is one police officer. And it`s made the news, indicating this doesn`t happen very often.

I`m sure that most police officers in the country wouldn`t dream of doing anything that stupid. I`m also sure this isn`t in the policemen`s handbook. This is the action of one renegade cop (he gets results dammit! :) ).

So it shouldn`t be the cops you`re annoyed at, it should be the stupid judge.
If that is who you were originally annoyed at fair enough, but there is a distinct anti-copper vibe from this thread, which i think is probably unfair.

if only he had been chasing an apple eating teenage girl - then there wouldn`t have been half this fuss...
