am i going funny in the head (ok,,,,no answer required) but there is a drink called sasperalla isn`t there :/ i remember drinking it recently, if not regularly, it used to be kept next to the vimto at both tesco & asda, but when i ask anyone in store about it all i get is "sasper-what" nah mate, never heard of it, & we`ve never sold in all the xx years i`ve worked here :¦ (& one of the shelf stackers had worked at out local tesco for 10 years )
anyone know a supermarket/local chain, ie costcutter etc that sells it ?

SARSAPARILLA
Sarsaparilla, the "good guy" drink of the early American western movies, is made from the dried roots of several various species of Smilax. Three of these are S. officinalis, S. papyracea, and S. medica. It does not come from the sassafras tree as some have been led to believe. Smilax plants, which are woody, thorny vines arising from swollen underground tubers, are abundant in Florida woodlands.

From what i recall the supermarkest did sell it, branded as cactus juice or something similar. Must admit i don`t remember seeing it for a long time
EDIT: Just mentioned this to a friend, and she reckons you can still get the stuff in Waitrose. :D

i`m sure the same company that makes vimto used to make it, it used to come in exactly the same bottles with similar labels (tho as i have no concept of time i dont know how long ago that was, but they used to be glas bottles that tappered inwards at the top)

That Mawson`s Cordial (www.sarsparilla.co.uk) is the real McCoy. Let it down with water or lemonade.
Ever had Mather`s Black Beer? Thick, unctuous and malty. You mix it with lemonade. It`s great stuff for building you up if you`re anaemic.

RE: Sarsaparilla cordial
There is a temperance bar in Rawtenstall, in Lancs that makes the cordial. (many a happy saturday spent in there as a lad)
The shop is called either Mr Fitzpatricks or Herbal health (been a while since I have been home)
Address is
6 Bank Street, Rawtenstall, Rossendale, Lancs
Tel 01706 211162
Details from a bottle my mum sent me for my birthday.
I hope that helps.
"Julian Graves" the health food / nut & seed shops (& sponsors of you are what you eat)sell sarsparilla - I think it`s rather like root beer I believe - I haven`t tried it because it`s got loads of sugar in it. If you want root beer sainsbury`s sell sugar free root beer for 59p for 2 litre bottle - I remember when you could buy it in McDonald`s.
happy new year to you all
