Page 1 of Code for Region 1 DVD Player

Leaving in Canada, we plan to buy a cheap Region 1 DVD player but nevertheless we would like to be able to play Region 2 DVDs that we receive from Europeans friends.
I think I understand that you could punch a certain code with your remote control which make your DVD player more or less region free. When is it that you have to punch this code the first time you are plugging the DVD player or each time you want to play a DVD which is not from the region we are living in, for us Region 1.
Is there a such a web site where I would find this magic code for the following DVD players: Sony NS 300, Toshiba SD-270 or Pioneer DV343.
If you can note answer my questions, would you know of a similar web site in North America that could visit.

Only certain players are hackable with the supplied remote, and Sony, Toshiba, and Pioneer players are not among them. Unless you`re planning on buying a pre-chipped unit (i.e. one already hardware modified for multi-region), avoid players from these three manufacturers.

It tends to be the "bargain basement" players which have these remote control hacks - see this section of the DVD Reviewer site for details:

You may hit problems playing PAL disks on a true region 1 NTSC machine.

The way I understand it, our PAL system is superior to the US NTSC system so making a PAL player "lower" ;) itself to play NTSC is easy.

However, to save money a manufacturer of an NTSC player doesn`t need to include the "extra" functionality (costs and all that) of being able to play PAL disks!

I may be wrong, but I would recommend you check it out. Try the Hardware forum.
