Sky+ installation...

Si Wooldridge (Reviewer) posted this on Saturday, 1st September 2007, 18:56

Is it essential to have a multiroom Sky+ installation plugged into a phone socket? In a brilliant bit of skewed luck, my NTL phone line appears to be faulty at the moment and unlikely to get fixed before the Sky engineer comes out...

Go that way, really fast. If something gets in your way, turn...

And those who dance will spin and turn,
And those who wait will wait no more,
And those who talk will hear the words,
And those who see will fade and die,
And those who laugh will surely fall,
And those who know will always feel their backs against the thin wall...

AFAIK it is essential yes. the engineer had me scratting around in the loft for microfilters when installing ours. He went on about the Sky+ box having to communicate with SKY, and to authenticate the installation. Also, it needs it to download your SKY programmes, for the SKY version of Teleport.

Also, when I mentioned about Multiroom he said the phone line had to be plugged in because SKY monitors that the card is in your Multiroom box, and not down the road at your mates ;) If there is no contact from the modem, then it won`t work.

Thats said, thats what the engineer told me, but he could have been a tosser cos he had to give us a new box for free.

Yes you do... its part of the contract you sign for the subsidised box (s) is that you have it connected to a working BT phone line, they do not accept cable phone connections either - you only have to have it connected for the first year, after that you can ditch it (unless you have Sky multiroom, then both boxes are required to have 24/7 connection to the same phone line to make sure both boxes are in the same house as mentioned above) all upgrades to the epg and box software are done via the dish - not the phone line, activation and pairing of the box is now done via a mobile device the engineer carries with him, not the phone line..

The phone connections is for the third party stuff like ordering pizza`s playing games and of course for sky`s box office which at the end of each month will dial out and tell sky how many films you have watched.. and of course veryfying sky multiroom connections...

And be warned if you have sky multiroom installed and unplug one of the boxes for any period of time, you will likely get charged for having two seperate boxes at whatever package rate you are on....

Some people will no doubt have heard or experienced something slightly different from the above, but all of the info is verified as correct to skys actual policy as my neighbours son is a "Sky"installer not a contractor and they are told, no phone line no install...
