Ipod Touch

8 or 16 gig - for an all purpose mobile media player, that`s cack!

Live a life you love, use a god you trust, and don`t take it all too seriously

hmmm, gonna go against the grain here, i had a nano, & it was the best mp3 player i ever had, & i`ve had lots, & lots. but i just hate itunes. but the hardware makes up for it, also, a few points to consider,

1. the us price for the 8gig device is $299, this is comparative to a 40+ gig archos. obviously, the archos (i`m using archos as a good quality equivalent) is hard drive based, non touch screen, & because of the hard disc storage, it`s bigger & will certainly not have a comparable battery life, so this is the trade of between memory size vs the size & battery life of the unit. if i where working away a lot & coulnd`t get to my pc, 8 gig might be a little small, but as i`m home every night, it wouldn`t be a problem.

also, the hardware is incredibly practical & intuitive to use, it really is lovely to navigate even with just the "proper" apple scroll wheel (trust me, i`ve had the knock off`s as well)

so given the advantages of flash memory over physical drive, i think it compares pretty favorably.

then you have the touch screen & the general size of the unit, & whilst aesthetics are less important to me than practicality, nobody can deny, thats a damned fine looking piece of kit, & whilst i`ve disliked all the purely touchscreen phones & pda`s i`ve used, apple "seem" to have got it bang to rights, watch the vid & tell me thats not a great system ?

my only gripe about apple is this, &, i`m gonna put my flack jacket on ready. but....

The software is awfull, this goes for both Itunes & Mac OsX in the case of OsX it just doesn`t do enough, believe me, if was upto scratch i`d be using it o my mac mini right now, but it doesn`t do what i require, so it`s runing XP instead (& running it better than a normal pc to boot....) & as for itunes,
sorry, but untill it gives you more options for individual folder controll & track placement, it`s a f***ing nighmare, usable, but horrendously flawed & completely over hyped, it`s much easier to manage your files on the archos, just plug it into the pc, open winamp (or any standard player that can create an M3U playlist) & organise your music from the individual directories making playlists as you go, instead of the awfull itunes that insists on lumpimg everything together, meaning you gotta sift through potentialy many thousands of tracks instead of a simple folder system.

my honest opinion, apple hardware....... is without equal, it`s functional, practical, & looks good. the pc side is overpriced tho.

apple software...... please, contract it to M$ i know, they only have more stuff cos they are the big bad guys, but thats the reality of the situation.

the quality of the hardware means i`ll find it hard to resist saving up for the 8gig model, @ $299 thats £150 with conversion. but i`ll gaurentee the good old UK will get f***ed as usual, it`ll be £299 over here.....but at the us rate, i do think it`s good value for money, when compared to similar quality brands.

btw, i remember flash memory mp3 players when they first came out, i guess thats about 5 maybe 7 years ago ? & a 16 MEG player from creative was £150 expandable to 32meg via compact flash memory cards :)

& even less time ago, the original sony memory stick walkman with a huge 128meg was £250 :D

we should of course expect such things to drop in price whilst getting better features/memory etc, but maybe we are all getting a little jaded as well :)

Well, the actual pricing is £199 for the 8gb and £269 for the 16gb. It`s almost exactly like an iPhone but without the phone bit.

I don`t think there are many people who would suggest the ipod touch is a great buy as a media player. if you`re looking for something comparable to the Archos offerings then the ipod classics are surely a closer alternative. What you get for your £199 for an ipod touch is the wi-fi capability and internet access. As more places offer free wi-fi and wider areas start to get coverage I could certainly see me paying that as a one off fee to have true mobile internet access. Yes, you might be better getting it as an iphone when they arrive in the UK but being able to have it without the contract is a nice option.

Personally I`m more concerned about the decision to make the ipod nano a mini media player rather than just music. I`ve never really understood why anyone would watch video on that size of screen, but I think it`s a mistake to have bulked it out to give you this - the attraction of the nano as a music player was its size.

Don`t see me buying any of these any time soon - quite happy with my 1st gen nano, but I`ll certainly be popping into the Apple store for a play.

at 3.5" it`s comparable to the archos direct equivilent. but the overall unit size is smaller :)

believe me, i used to be just as biased against the ipod. untill i had one. they are worth the money (tho i don`t have one at the moment.)

slightly larger screen archos 604
edit= in fairness this pick doesn`t do the archos justice, as the screens actually just under an inch larger than the ipod touch.

each to there own of course, but i know which i`d pick :) & at £199 i`ll probs get one fairly soon :)

btw, this is the video nano....@ £129 for the 8gig model it well priced compared to the previous models, but as said earlier, video on such screens is a little poinltess, my monile phone does it better that :) tho, as it`s cheaper than the old 4 gig standard nano, i guess it could be considered a free add on....

like those crazy expensive xbox 360`s that break & don`t do half the stuff my gen 1 xbox does :p ;)

i used to call peeps for being ipod sheep, but unless you have actually owned a recent generation ipod, your not qualified to judge it, the hardware really is that good.

Exactly what I do with my Ipod, tried to use Itunes for a week or so but it so was bad I had to get rid of it. Winamp lets me scrobble all the tracks I`ve played on my Ipod onto my Lastfm charts aswell which is handy.

cool, you could never do that before cos the nano (& all ipods) used to get rid of the folders & shove everything into a root dir, can you now synch an ipod up to winamp ?
