Page 1 of Banksy....Is it Art or Graffiti ??
General Forum
The elusive Banksy has been in the news recently. Looking at his work I would be honoured if he painted some of his stuff on my wall!

I don`t like the last `piece` in the `outdoor` section but the others are good.

RE: Banksy....Is it Art or Graffiti ??
Theres a huge difference between the work of banksy and some scrote tagging `kev woz ere` on every wall in a street, There is some fantastic graffiti art about that is as good as any artwork in a gallery. Banksy is an artist, he just produces his work in a different medium. i dont think his work is any less valuable because its on a wall and not on a canvas in a gallery, his work is very clever. Sadly not all of his artwork is appreciated by its `owners` but then graffiti has to by its very nature be unwanted, graffiti in a controlled environment isnt graffiti...Im starting to sound like a snobby art critic lol
Would I want it on the side of my house? I dunno, probably not...but not because its unsightly but because the art has to be in the right context, most of his art interacts with its location, so something in one location wont work the same in another location

RE: Banksy....Is it Art or Graffiti ??
Some of those are a bit crap, but some are bordering on genius. I usually have a seething hatred for graffiti, but some of those are very impressive, both in terms of artistic skill and comic effect.
I like a lot of Banksy stuff, and have been into his work for quite a few years - its easy when you work in london - it used to be everywhere
I would f***ing love to have one on the side of my house - it would add a good 20k to its value if nothing else.
His stuff sells for s*** loads.
As for the artist question, well he produces canvas`, one offs prints, screen prints and exhibits in galleries. I saw his crude oils show a couple of years ago and just walked in, these days you couldnt get near a showing..
as for the prints. I have two - am very lucky. I can remember going into a temporary shop to buy my 1st one and had a choice of about ten, including canvases. today those canvases would be worth ten grand.. and at the time i couldnt afford the £250... i do feel a bit gutted that i missed out on buying others that i really liked before the prices went crazy.
having said that, not so sure about some of his recent work.
other people of merit are.

Just clicked on D*Face and his work is quality also. His work is reminiscent to Banksy`s but you can tell he has his own personal touch.
I`d 100% state that this type of painting is art. A lot would say it`s graffiti. It causes a conflict in opinion. That must be the point to this as a whole.....

Not looked at any of his stuff - dont need to, its irrelevant in the grand scheme of my response
If he does his work at the permission of the property owener - its Art (no matter whether it is brilliant or down right awful)
If he does his work with no prior consent from the property owner - its graffitti and vandalism
plain and simple IMO
