LHC Activation on Monday night - the end of the world?
http://www.lhcountdown.com/?p=1
The Large Hadron Collider will be going online at midnight on Monday/Tuesday... if you`ve read Angels and Demons you will know this as the massive tunnel at CERN that could open a black hole that will swallow the Earth. I kind of hope it doesn`t though.
Thoughts?

Didn`t you hear the news that they (CERN) had declared it perfectly safe? :D

(Of course they did, they all have spaceships ready and waiting...)

Did you know they were also worried when testing the first nuclear bombs that the blast might set off a chain reaction that would burn up all the oxygen in the Earth`s atmosphere. They had their fingers crossed... those kerazee scientists!

Wow, shocking how bad that site looks in Firefox. I guess other than failing to research and understand the science, they also totally failed to understand web standards.
The comments are hilarious, had to add my own. And SHOCK HORROR, it`s moderated, so they`ll no doubt delete it and it won`t get added at all. One has to wonder how exactly they will deal with the endless posts of "hahaha" when things don`t end next week.
On a related note, always a good read:

They turned it on a month ago (watched the countdown on that every site) but they won`t get any results for several weeks. What they`re trying to record is an event that takes place millions of times every day - protons bumping into each other. What the LHC does (as I recall) is to do it deliberately in a controlled environment and record the results. the chances of a a black hole opening up and virtually nil and if it did, we wouldn`t know anything about it until it was over.

Large Hadron and chips, please.
UPDATE: After reading the knife crime thread, and that business about the French students being murdered, I`m kind of hoping Earth does slide down its own black hole...

Well, of course that would be the ideal thing, wouldn`t it? Some kind of niceness sieve to stop nice people going down the black hole.
It`s the old story though, isn`t it - a nasty minority spoiling things for the rest of us.
