Annoying White Lines

I have recently purchased a DVD paleyr and wide screen TV....and they are great. Sound is perfect and the picture is mosty perfect. I say mostly, as when I watch certain films where there is a very black background to a scene with white or light images (titles for example) transposed onto it, I get like white lines coming off of the writing to one side. It`s almost how you would depict writing that was moving , leaving a trail behind it.
A good example of this is the opening credits to ALIEN. It really spoils the viewing.
What I need to know is why this is happening and how do I irradicate this misery. Is it the TV, DVD player, Disk or connection?

Can someone pleeease help?

Thanks

Phil

Have you got any noise-reduction settings on your TV? If so turn them off, they can often cause this sort of artifact.
