Page 1 of Rover Woes

Got a Rover 45 and every now and again when cornering or braking harder than normal the SRS light illuminates and the engine cuts out. Any advice on what this is and whether i can stop it/switch it off??

But seriously folks. Sounds like a potentially serious electrical fault. If the fault occurs with a heavy shift in the car`s momentum, it`s more than likely a loose connection on the alternator (amateur theory). Either way, get thee hence to a garage

Dunno about the SRS illumination but I know of an ABS thing with loads of cars these days where the ABS light illuminates and the car seems to scrape or shudder as it comes to a halt.
Something called a relucter ring or summat.

I`ve got a 214 that can corner hard with no issues, I need to talk to my mate tomorrow (mechanic) so I`ll ask him if he knows of it as he`s pretty damned good at diagnosis with a good description.

I used to browse there occasionally when I had a Rover 420 , it`s a very good place for good advice.

Answer to the question when I asked this morning was:
"Hmm.. the airbag light is coming on too?
I would have said there`s a wiring loom runs down the back of the engine on the 45`w that causes them to cut out if you brake hard, corner or otherwise make the engine move in a certain way. It`s because the wiring loom rubs on the engine block and chafes which causes the insulation to rub away and when you make the movement happen, it cuts out the engine due to the shorted wire.
Fix for it is easy, find the worn area, insulate with tape ensuring the wires aren`t touching each other or individually insulated and use a tie wrap or two to hold it back off the engine block.
It doesn`t do any damage using the tie wraps, it`s just that the way the wiring loom runs is a poor design from Rover.

Not sure about the airbag light, could be a conincidence, could be the same wires just causing the short to make it light up, might be another short, might be a faulty bulb. Happens all the time on Rovers, had loads of them in with a wee bit of black tape over it so the owner can ignore it without seeing it light up!"

Hope that`ll help a bit. He also said that if it *is* the loom you can sometimes see it at night by looking in the engine bay and revving it etc and you`ll sometimes see the wires sparking on the back of the engine block.

Rovers....Rovers Rovers Rovers...
For my sins, I`ve had a 214Si, 216Si and a 220Gti.
We went through a Rover stage in the company fleet. :o
Never again, they were all unreliable buckets.
The 220Gti, especially, had unfathomable electrical problems.
Complete lottery as to what would happen when you turned the ignition key.
Sometimes, perfectly fine.
Sometimes, nothing.
Literally nothing, not even turning over.
This would be in the same day. :/
