Watching a car on ebay. Here is the history of the bids.

£2,445.00 08-May-10 10:23:28 BST

£2,395.00 14-May-10 18:23:51 BST

Starting Price £950.00 07-May-10 20:32:37 BST

When we first looked 2 days back it was £2,465.00. Then yesterday this was said.

Because of this the price dropped to £1543.00.

Then later yesterday it was back up to £2445.00. But no one bid, it was an old bid. Is this right. I thought the price would gradually rise untill it was won.

whats the item number... i will take a look, could have been people retracted bids, and falls back to last highest bid?

But no one bid, it was an old bid.Doesn`t work like that though.  Although it may appear as an old bid, it can be placed at the same time as their earlier one - it just didn`t need to be the price they entered.  It will automatically bid the amount needed to `just` win the auction.  Then when the £2395 bid came in, the other bid was automatically done to lead the auction again.  i.e. the initial bid isn`t necessarily `only` the bid shown - they will have put in a highest price and bids are placed automatically to outbid higher bids - until their highest price is outbid. :)

It`s how the the new bidding system works.
If you see somthing you fancy that`s got 6 days to go and it`s only 99p, you can bid £20, it`ll show up as 99p and should anyone bid more, your bid will automatically be increased to beat the bid.

It works well for me, as I can put in my absolute maximum for an item and just leave it to work for itself

Yeh, it always worked like that. You put in your highest bid amount and if anyone else bids, your bid automatically increases until it reaches your maximum.

I meant new-ish. When I first started using ebay you had to enter each bid manually. The auto-bid system is still fairly new. And when I mean `new` I mean a couple of years, and when I say `fairly` I mean get yer coat you`ve pulled..

It can sometimes appear confusing when you look at the history of bids and see the dates being earlier etc.

Click on the greyed out "Show Automatic Bids" and you`ll see if it`s someone with a max bid being bid up by others.
It`s also a way to avoid putting a reserve price on, shove it in cheap and get someone to bid your minimum reserve... only downside to anyone doing it is the charges for the sale if it goes through and if they get caught Ebay usually chuck a wobbly at them.
