Page 1 of Cumbria taxi driver shooter kills 12 locals so far

Some taxi guy in Whitehaven has gone on the rampage and killed 12 locals in the west coast of cumbria by driving down the coast road towards Selerfield shooting at people from his taxi, and then killed himself.

Reason.... unknown at present.

On the news, 12 dead so far, 30 in hospital, 4 critical, He is believed to have used a sniper rifle and a shotgun.

I can see the gun laws being discused once more.

My condolences to all the families involved and a full return to health to the injured.

Regarding gun laws, changing them will not work. After Dunblane and hand guns were banned gun crime doubled.

It seems he boiled over due to a will that did not go his way, His twin brother and the family solicitor were some of those killed.

The guy also held a firearms certificate for 20 years.

I was brought up in a rural area, I`ve been around guns.
But it`s always struck me as strange that anyone is allowed to have them on `trust`.
A trained police office has to sign guns in and out of a secure area in their station.
Why can`t farmers do the same?
If they require use of their gun, they have to go to a police station and sign them in/out.
Despite what farmers might say, it`s my experience they don`t need access to guns without prior planning.

Pretty sure we have some of the strictest gun laws in the world, so I`m not sure this one is going to be easily pinned on lack of leglislation.

In the paper today they said he had recently become a grandfather.

I`m glad the gun laws are strict
I`d probably shoot one person a day otherwise

That may be so, but it`s still easy for authorised people to grab their gun.
Which increases the risk of a `spur of the moment` event.
Were the guns kept in a neutral armoury and you were required to plan your access to the gun, maybe these sorts of events would be reduced.
Not eliminated, but maybe moments of madness would be reduced.

Oh, and I should say, some of the authorised people I`ve met are some of the most substandard and borderline mental people you`ll come across. :/
If it were the US, they`d be referred to as retarded hillbillies.
Yet because they work on farms, they`re allowed to work heavy machinery and use guns. :/

Right, so things haven`t moved on in 25 years.
My mate knew where the keys to his dad`s gun cabinet were.
So dod umpteen other people who worked there.
We used to sneak the things out and take pop shots at rabbits and tin cans!
Stupid that it was even possible for us to do that.

BTW, gang related gun crime is a problem of course.
But you rarely hear of umpteen people being killed at once in those scenarios.
Certainly not little old ladies with shopping, or primary school kids.
If gang members want to `cap each other`s asses` (I`m so street), that`s their problem.
