Hanging Baskets & Tubs.

Paull (Elite) posted this on Tuesday, 29th June 2010, 11:29

In the past I`ve grown either from seed or bought plugs. This year we got some partly grown flowers in packs of 12 etc. Our baskets this year look really colourful already.
We got.Dianthus,(Cherry Picotee). Petunia Yellow. Buzy Lizzie.(fantastic little chaps). Trailing Lobelia fountain mix. Petunia peach sorbet mix. We have a few reseeding from last year like Pansies etc. What do you have & are there any others to recommend me.

You mean for wine or just England sour grapes.

You`ve got all the classic basket/tub flowers there except one, Paull - where are your fuscias?

I`ve got to have fuscias in amongst the others because I absolutely adore their bright colours and huge blooms, especially in amongst the smaller confetti flowers of lobelia. Depending on the colours, they ,look like ballerinas or flamenco dancers.

Fuscias are my wife`s favourites. We do have a pot with one that takes up the whole pot, but it is everlasting (if that`s what it`s called). It`s more a small bush. Are the type that you put in a basket different or do they turn into small bushes?

The one you are on about is a hardy fuscia. They appear to die away in winter but come back the following spring. No, the ones you use in pots and baskets are trailing fuscias, and they will die if left out in the winter. They don`t get big and bushy, but just trail down the sides of the container through the summer.

The other little beauties I thought of afterwards are trailing geraniums. Not the standard boring ones, but these have smaller ivy-like leaves, and often have double or variagated flowers. Very pretty. Again, they need bringing in for the winter.

Edit: One more if you can find them, Paull - Million Bells. Just take a look at this photo - I have grown them several times over the years, but can`t always find them. They are amazing, with literally thousands of tiny flowers all over the plant.

Begonia Apricot shades are realy good for baskets to late for this year though and they produce a corm to save for next year, I got 84 bizzy lizzys from Thompson and Morgan this year after my results from seeds where eaten by a snail. Like the photos sort of thing I have been trying to achieve for years.........

Thanks smurfette. A couple of good ideas there.

Mark, I used to grow nasturtinms a lot, only later did I find out you could eat them. I do have some tomato plants to eat with cheese though.
