100 times more effect than the New Zealand earthquake.
Tsunami warnings in Honolulu Hawaii, 3000 miles away?

Buildings in Tokyo were designed to withstand earthquakes, and subsequently not too much damage in the Capital, but the video footage we are seeing of the tsunami wave sweeping through the suburbs and countryside is scary!

**** a friend of mine lives in Yamagata which is where the report comes from at the mo :( She likes to travel around a bit, so hopefully she`s somewhere else and sooner or later she`ll respond to all the texts, facebook messages, emails etc asking if she`s ok, but no doubt she has much more important things on her mind :(

Edit: Phew, heard my friend is ok, but sad to see all the distruction :( Interesting to hear about all the training people have in case this happens, and how the reserve fire brigades etc operate.

Amazing to see the effects on other countries near by as well :(

Pics of the whirlpool in the harbour are freaky.

Been watching bits on BBC News 24, the relentless power of the wave running through the surrounding farm lands, scary. It`s nothing like in the movies, that`s for sure.

Have you watched Hearafter?

No, I`ve seen The Day After Tomorrow and 2012 though! :) Admittedly extreme examples of unreality. Is Hearafter anygood?

So they say that the aftershocks will be much less than the 8.9 (the biggest quake Japan has ever seen since records began, the same size as the Chile earthquake last year), in the mere 7.6 range! :o

The first 10-15mins that feature the Tsunami are actually pretty good, very good effects used etc for it.  The film itself though is terrible.

One of the most boring films I`ve seen.

Back to this though, I haven`t seen much of the reports from the news as in work, so haven`t viewed anything just heard the news this morning and then been reading reports, just saw this

Quote:
Auckland-based geologist Chris Buckley tells the BBC World Service the tsunami wave is on its way towards New Zealand at 500 or 600 miles an hour. "It`s kind of like looking at an express train heading towards us right now", he says.

News Report

This article says it`s likely to only be a 1 metre wave when it hits New Zealand, and it`ll be at low tide, so not likely to cause much damage.

Just as well, they have enough to deal with!

They`ve been saying on the BBC that when it arrived in Indonesia, it was half a metre high so did no real damage. However they also explained this is because Indonesia is side on to the fault line where the quake occured.

Hawaii and much smaller islands seem to be the big worry at present, because it is almost directly in line with the fault line. Due there about 1:40-2:15pm our time.

Mail Online Report

I know it`s the Mail, but they raise an interesting question:

Is the impending "Supermoon" the cause of this disaster? Could be, because we know how much the moon pulls us, and affects the tide, winds etc...
