Page 1 of Canada`s Slut Walk

In response to a talk a police officer gave at a local school, where he said to avoid being raped don`t dress like a slut, people organised a march on the local police station!

Well, I`m probably gonna be unpopular here but this touches on a subject of actual conversation quite regularly in the Taxi.
These are *always* initiated by the passenger and not myself but it`s amazing to see just how many people have the same view.... and those who have the opposite view are unfortunately, stereotypical of the "type".

The way some Females dress for a night out on a  Friday/Saturday really does beggar belief sometimes.
Glasgow isn`t exactly the warmest city in the country and there are times I`m wearing a jacket even when driving and you *still* see girls walking past wearing next to nothing.
By next to nothing I mean exactly that, exposed stomach area, mini skirt that any kind of bending movement in any direction reveals whatever underwear (if they even have any) is being worn, ridiculously low cut top.

Recently there was a situation where a couple of girls, nice looking, rather provocatively dressed and to say well endowed would be on the right track.
So much so that if they were to jump about I`d be very surprised if there wasn`t an accident of an exposing nature.... anyway, there`s this young lad who virtually can`t take his eyes off their boobs and one of them then gets the ar$e and starts shouting about not looking at her t!ts etc... until someone else said "If you don`t want anyone to look at them, why have you got them on show? Cover them up and then he wouldn`t even notice"

I`m not saying for one millisecond that there is any justification on any level for Rape, I`m also not saying on any level that a Female cannot dress in what ever she wants to but in regards to the (rather badly phrased from the sounds of it) Toronto Cop`s comments it has to be realised that a scantily dressed female to an inebriated hormonal guy seems like a come on and when told no it`s a bit harder to get the point across than if a bit more sensibly dressed.

And on that point I don`t mean an ankle length skirt and a kagoul jacket. I think everyone here is mature enough to know what I mean by the dress sense. I am actually in the Female camp`s favour that they should be able to dress as they feel but FFS look at the girl in the video wearing lacy tights and knickers, that`s just ****ing ridiculous! (and yes, there are very similar sights to be seen on a Saturday night!)

Funnily enough, all those who start bleating on about it in the way that girl does are usually dressed in a similar manner :-/

You wouldn`t put yourself in danger by removing safety work-clothing at work or by walking through an area you knew was unsafe, so why allow yourself to be in a potentially dangerous situation just by reusing to wear a skirt an inch or two longer....?

You`re right, another example, ppl should be able to leave house, car etc unlocked, valuables on display etc, but you don`t because "it`s asking for trouble" if you do. Obviously it`s not asking for it, but it`s sensable to take precautions to avoid crime.

I think this is where the major confusion enters into the argument in the "for" camp in that they think anyone with a modicum of sense saying that it`s asking for it almost means it`s OK for the Rapist.
They just don`t seem to understand that by the phrase we don`t actually mean you`re going out and encouraging it.

Good analogies there too admars.. especially with the "valuables on display", I`ll bet a pound to a penny every Parent would regard their Daughter`s body as more valuable than anything in their jewellery box.

I think if you dress a certain way, you can`t complain about people staring. But unless you are wearing something like a T shirt with "**** YOU" on it to pick your 2 year old up from Nursery, I don`t think its a justification for any sort of abuse, let alone rape.

I`m not saying you think it is Jimbo, I know you don`t, I understand what you are saying.

Kebabhead makes a good point, its fashionable in certain groups to dress that way. Also there are certain extremist Muslims who would regard any women exposing anything beyond a tiny area around her eyes to be "asking for it".

I think the main reason they did the march was because a police officer told a room full of both sexes that dressing like a slut was asking for it, which was essentially offering a justification to the boys that it was okay to rape women dressed like that, and indicating to the girls that if they did dress like that and get raped, they wouldn`t get much sympathy from the police.

I totally agree no one deserves to get rape no matter what their wearing,however she will get no respect if she desires to dress like a slut.Now please I do at times like to dress somewhat sexy when I do go out with me gent, but not to the point he would be ashame of me, like what I just saw in that clip.Some of those ladies do need a complete makeover., that has no taste whatsoever!

The officer may have simply stated that if you dress in a certain manner you may end up exposing yourself to the unwanted attention from the wrong type of person. 

Sensible advice and vastly different from "assuming" a police officer stated "Dress like a tart and you will get what you deserve"

I don`t think that anyone dressed in low cut tops, short skirts etc should complain when blokes are looking at them, as whether most of us want to admit it or not, we dress like that so that people look at us, because it makes us feel sexy and wanted etc.

That doesn`t necessarily (sp?) mean we want sex, but its nice to know that people still pay attention.

I used to go out wih girl friends and dress a little sluttily (nowhere near the extent of that video), to dance, have a drink or two and maybe flirt a bit, and it never occured to me that I was asking for it.  I don`t think people are asking for it, but a little common sense is a good idea...if you go out in your underwear (which is essentially what tights and knickers are) then you look like you`re looking for something a little more than a drink and dance, if everyone can see everything everytime you move then the same again.  I`m not saying peopel deserve to get raped, but as someone said before about vaulables, then a little protection is probably a good idea.

To be honest, I don`t think women should drink as much as many do as well, as that seems to invite trouble.  Not because I`m being sexist, but because women get raped and sexually abused when they`re drunk more often than men and it makes sense to be in control, as people are IMO slightly more likely to help you if you need it if you`re no completely rat assed.

I remember we were on holiday a year or two ago, and these two girls who looked about eighteen were wearing the shortest skirts I`ve ever seen, along with low cut tops and bare middles.  Eventually they pounced on a table of lads next to us, who they looked like they`d never met before, they accepted drinks fom them, hitched their skirts a bit higher, left them for about half an hour then came back, finished the drinks they`d left with complete strangers, and began the slutty dancing routine, they all disappeared, then an hour later, girl one is at the bar in tears with her mate insisting she`d been raped.  They didn`t deserve to be raped, but a little sense would have probably stopped it from happening IMO.
