Battle Royal (Tartan release) edited?

Lumchan (Harmless) posted this on Friday, 1st March 2002, 18:45

Does anyone know for certain whether the Tartan Asia Extreme release of Battle Royale is edited from the original? The TAE box says that the movie is 109 minutes, but the R3 box (the only other one I could find) says that its running time is 114minutes.
From what I understand, the director cut the film down himself for a second release in Japan (so that more people could see it) and some international releases of it. Since most Western countries are afraid that movies with kids doing violent things will make real kids do violent things because they`re just that dumb.
Sooooo, is the TAE region 0 release really the edited version? If it is, does anybody know where to get one that isn`t chopped?

Thanks!

I think this is down to the age old problem of time differences between film and video releases.

According to the bbfc website the film version had a running time of 113m 7s with the video release lasting 108m 29s and both were released in the UK uncut.

"When a film is transferred to video the running time will be shorter by approximately 4% due to the differing number of frames per second. This does not mean that the video version has been cut or re-edited."

So my guess would be that one has used the film time, while the other has used the video time.

This could also be the age old fact that the R3 is NTSC and the R2 is PAL whichs mean that the R2 has a higher frame rate thus the shortened running time.
