Page 1 of Mong-gate.
General Forum
A row has broken out between Ricky Gervais and various others over use of the word mong and making "mong" faces. He claims he is reclaiming the word and that it no longer means someone with Down`s syndrome. (then why the faces Ricky) He has told his followers to call anyone who disagrees with him a mong.
This has led to people like Richard Herring (who does a lot for Scope) questioning his wisdom in what he is doing.
Because of this he has been attacked on twitter with people calling him a "mong" and "spastic mong" obviously in the new use of the words.
It`s been an interesting debate. Reasoned argument on one side. Calling people a mong from the other.
Anyone been following it?

Been following it just by dint of the fact that I follow a few of the protagonists. I pretty much couldn`t care less, apart from he fact that twitter spats between famous people can be thrillingly entertaining (and cringeworthy).
Have you ever listened to Herring`s `As It Occurs To Me` podcast? AIOTM (aiotm)* He sails pretty close to the wind with some of his material, e.g. Susan Boyle "I`m not mental..." (admittedly, with hilarious consequences).
*in joke alert
This just seems to be the latest in a trend of re-patriation of words by people who perhaps aren`t in a position to be allowed to do it. When I first read about it the other day I thought, well it`s a bit bad, but how bad is it?
And then I thought about it for a bit, and it seems just like certain other words these days which are being used as terms of offense/distaste.
I guess it all boils down to this for me, would I think it was okay as a white middle class person to decide that years of racial abuse are now meaningless and it`s okay for me to call anyone n*****?

Interesting coincidence, controlversy and new tv show?Former I suspect, I`m pretty sure Gervais has caused controversy when he has nothing to plug.

It`s Herring that I follow and that`s how I know about it. I got a mention on his blog once where he wondered if it was my Hitler Sooty that gave him the idea for Hitler Moustache. (A proud moment even if it didn`t)
Yes Herring does jump over the line with both feet. But there is usually a point to it. Making you question yourself about why you laughed. Other times he is just childish. But I know that if you pulled him up on something he would enter a debate with you. Not tell his fans to abuse you.
I myself wouldn`t be bothered if someone called me a mong. But if it get put back in to common usage people start calling people with Down`s, mong again. As a large part of our society are ****s. Do we really want that?

There was an article on AOL yesterday about this but it seemed it was on whether Gervais skewed a poll regarding it.
They had included his tweet that the PC brigade were out to say it was wrong etc and at 11AM before the tweet it was running in the regions of 60% against his using the word but by the end of the poll it was heavily in his favour.
At first it seemed AOL had commented that perhaps it wasn;t so bad after all, then yesterday reported he may have loaded the poll with his tweet pointing to it therefore loaded the vote in his favour.
He`s as funny as a tax reminder.
I`ve never watched the Office and willing to accept it was funny as all and sundry tell me but how long can he ride the wave from that?
Even the "Idiot Abroad" series on Sky, I like it, I find Karl`s antics and comments great but what I don`t like is the constant interruption of Gervais and that other pillock with their "Oh, you picked (x) but we thought we`d make it interesting so go do this stupidly dangerous or degrading stunt too", and the constant going on by Gervais that Karl hadn`t had a prostate exam because he obviously thought it was funny.
Schoolboy humour and time he grew up instead of trying to mock a part of society dealing with an ailment of any kind.

"There`s that word again... is there a problem with the Earth`s gravitational pull in the future?"
I used to find Gervais funny. I liked The Office, I thought Extras was alright... but then, I dunno, maybe I grew up?
His humour seems pretty juvenile, and I think he`s just got a bit too big for his boots, perhaps a bit complacent. I now find him more irritating than Russell Brand.
Maybe it`s the difference between the man and his work. I like his work, I think The Office is a classic, and I loved Extras. I`ve enjoyed his stand-up and when he`s presented awards ceremonies.
Just don`t get the Karl Pilkington thing at all, and find Gervais` podcasts very unfunny.
I still like Russell Brand! Probably for the same reasons Doc respects Herring, he`s willing to have a debate on a subject and justify his actions.

If you follow Gervais you`ll have seen that he often pulls a `mong` face when sending a tweet. This probably hasn`t been helping his case...
