Page 1 of Ebay help please

Girlfriend is selling a horse saddle on Ebay.

Put it up for £50 plus postage and someone has yesterday offered £100 plus postage.

Said they will either pay by Paypal or Cheque to avoid fees.

She has 43 feedback and seems legit enough.


First of all

a) How do you end listing early anyway to sell to someone for agreed price.

b) Is avoiding Ebay fees just far too much of a pain in the arse (or is a common occurance), plus is it risk for payment purposes etc aswell

I`m not a massive ebay user but,

Can you edit the listing to include a buy it now price that suits you both. Then they can just click that and pay. If not just ad a note to the listing stating that its advertised else where and you have the right to end auction early if its sold. Then arrange for them to pay cash on collection.

Personally i would stick with ebay and do the buy now option because you will be covered by paypal and ebay. Do they have a verified paypal account?

As far as I`m aware, the best way to do this is to end the current auction (you have to give a reason - probably state it was listed wrongly). Then re-list it again, but instead of being an auction, have it at the buy-it-now price that was offered, and then immediately inform the potential buyer of the link so that they can buy it before anyone else does. Things to note: Buy-It-Now costs more to list than auctions (I believe). Also, I would only do this if you`re very confident the potential buyer will actually buy it and pay immediately. Regarding doing things outside of eBay (to avoid fees), I have done it in the past, but I don`t think the Paypal protection plan will be included in those cases (if paid through Paypal of course).

Go into ebay and search the help desk for `end listing early`.
It is perfectly fine for you to agree a price with a buyer and close the listing early, as long as the sale is concluded via ebay.
If you simply want to end the listing early and conclude the deal off ebay, you will have to `lie` and say the item has become faulty or has been wrongly described.
This is frowned upon, because it is fee avoidance.

Cheers guys, thought it was dodgy on the avoiding fees, but as this person has said it to my missus, she was keen to go down that route.

I`d said to missus I assume they would look at correspondence as it`s all been done through Ebay, but good to know my assumption was right.

We had a scan last night and not many seem to have gone above £100, but it`s hard to judge because of the different sizes etc, it seems very specific to size wanted/available on the prices.

I`m of the opinion take the £100 as don`t think she expected to get that much and she`ll never know how much it could have gone for.  If she only get`s £80 by leaving it to bid, she`ll be beating herself up over it :D

Esp. in the form like blah space blah AT blah dot com etc.
Basically don`t agree to do it out of ebay using the ebay mailing/messaging system.  And you would only ever do it out of ebay for `buyer collects` things..

They gave me their phone number, so I never replied to it and we arranged outside of ebay...then I ended the auction prematurely.
Ebay collected fees on the value of the offer in the message (didn`t even bother contacting me about it).
I just thought "it`s a fair cop" and paid them.

I did that about 2 years ago selling a brand new shower that wouldn`t fit, £250`s worth and had £100 of bids when I decided to remove that part but was driving south at the time so would do it when I arrived.

I got there around 11pm, checked Fleabay and it had gone. Then I got a message about breaching the rules and that Fleabay had pulled it.
Same day, up goes another with a BIN of £100 plus post, uses MY photos, Fleabay don`t give a rat`s bollock and it sells the next day, meanwhile MY one ends up going at £80-odd because of it.
