Proof, if proof were needed, that everything we`re told about piracy is bullshit

Here`s the link

But here`s the highlights;
Quote:

Figures show earnings increased by 5% to £1.04bn

Total admissions were also up 1.4% from 2010 with 171.6m tickets sold

The figures also show that independent British film recorded its best year in terms of market share with 13.5%.
Something they misguidedly believe is that a downloaded film is a lost sale. That`s how they`re free to pull figures out of their arses when they makes these crappy statements about how much money they`ve lost

One of the most downloaded films of last year was The King`s Speech... the film that went on to gross roughly 32 times what it cost to make.

That`s with a perfect screener copy leaking the same week as its theatrical release.

The previous year`s most downloaded movie? Avatar.

Piracy doesn`t affect the good films, its the crap ones which the critics slated that nobody wants to risk buying that it damages.

These are the people who, as of about a week ago, had reintroduced cinema ads warning that downloaded films are poor quality/the size of a postage stamp on the screen etc. They have no problem with lying when it supports their agenda.

There are some really duff films that are being pushed in the high steet shops at the moment that are even worse than piracy, for example....

Troll hunter DVD in HMV selling for £12.

All it is, is a home made film in scandinavia made with `c` rated actors, the film is english subtitles only, and has that rough and shaky hand cam movement. also the special effects of the trolls are tripe, almost like plastercine models.

How do I know all this, I got it for my birthday, and it was so bad I just binned it, as it was the worst movie I had seen for years.

On in The Times sports section (yes there is no end to where the lies are peddled) there was a piece by Sports Feature Writer of the Year (impressive award that) which just peddled the same old one sided argument that it`s theft, and any way you try to justify it, you are stealing. He was on about pirated streaming of footie games.

I can understand that some goods are luxuries, and some of them carry a premium. Heck, any mobile phone will make a call, but that doesn`t stop there being a higher price market.

Trouble is things like watching your football team play, and seeing a movie, don`t really come under the same rules. If you want to see Lord of the Rings, there is only one company your money can go to. Nobody is competing to bring you alternative versions, because they can`t.

And I`m actually not sure pirating is the right word for copying things anyway, since pirates are mostly on the ocean, and they steal physical goods. You can argue that pirates are people who copy work and sell it, but much of what (some of, because it`s actually not all of) the industry hates aren`t any different from those who copied music in the 70s onto cassette from their friends.

All that aside, the biggest problem with taking their arguments seriously is the biggest reasons for them banging on about it all is greed. I`m not saying there isn`t a lot of talent that suffers because of it, because I think there is. It`s just that the industry itself makes so much money which doesn`t go to the majority of the talent that creates it, it`s hard to feel sorry for them as a whole.

If we had an endless stream of new up and coming good bands that were really suffering and failing because of piracy popping up left and right, saying how it`s ruining their careers before it starts, those would be worth listening to. However all we have is a string of disgustingly rich artists and company execs bemoaning how they might not be able to afford that 10th home in Costa del Somewhere.

The trolls were supposed to look cartoony - if you listen to what the Hunter says at the start, he says that the children`s fables about them and the illustrations of their appearance are taken from factual encounters.

Another thing that seems to have passed the experts by, is that not all movies are copied for profit. In many cases, it`s simply a race to see who can upload a TS of the latest release first. It`s all about the kudos

I though troll hunter was very good.....

As for piracy, its always blown way out of proportion, its a problem of course, but not to the scale `they` would have you believe
