Best DVD sites

Rob.B (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Sunday, 4th June 2000, 21:31

Hello all, I`m new to this DVD lark and I was wondering what the best sights are for buying DVD`s on the web. I`ll be looking for region 1 & 2 disks so any suggestions will be great.

The ones I use most of the time, in no particular order, are www.dvdworld.co.uk (region2), www.dvdboxoffice.com (region1), and www.play247.com (both regions).

Hope that helps!

Rob,

DVD Box Office are by far the best Region 1 site (based in Ontario Canada).

They are the cheapest generally, especially once the fact of free international shipping is factored in, they have never let me down sending a disc, and they will send discs individually, even when multiple discs are ordered at the same time, thereby avoiding any customs duty because the individual shipments never get above the threshold.

As for Region 2, it`s less easy to say but DVD World have done well for me in the past. They even sent a DVD I ordered off the web straight away - and I mean that I placed the web order, then called them up and the guy put it in the envelope while I was on the phone!! - in order to get George of the Jungle out in time for my 4-yr old daughter`s birthday (she has a big crush on Brendan Fraser - God help me when she becomes a teenager!)

But having said that, I`m a lot less R2-monogamous than I am for R1. In the end, I go where the best price is and that generally means shopping around for R2 discs. I`ve used DVDOnline, Black Star (despite their glacially-slow website), DVD warehouse, DVD World, Play 247 (always reminds me of Radio 1 in the really old days!!), and @jakarta. None of them let me down.

Check out http://www.dvdupdate.com/default.asp#search for a search engine of Region 1 and Region 2 prices. They sort sites by price including shipping once you input a disc title and select a region.

And don`t forget to compare the regions before buying. DVD Web have a fairly good region comparison to help you pick which version to buy.

Hope that lot helps.

Amazon.com ship via Amsterdam to the UK and so avoid any taxes
Express.com ship via UK Customs to the UK and for some reason seem to be targeted by customs for taxation.

So for R1 I would say http://www.amazon.com
and http://www.dvdboxoffice.com and http://www.dv-depot.com are pretty good as well (they have customs avoiding methods as well)

For R2 UK.

http://www.play247.com
or
http://www.dvdstreet.co.uk (tend to be the best some pre-orders, especially when they have one of their offers on such as the happyhour that finished last week and was giving 17.5% off their prices) (to check for new offers just watch the DVD Bargin Forum at http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk
or
http://www.blackstar.co.uk (not the cheapest but they do have good offers every now and then)
