Short UK Breaks - any recommendations?

Ben Franklin (Reviewer) posted this on Sunday, 29th July 2012, 11:18

Hi guys,

I`ve got a couple of weeks off work coming up, and would like to spend a few nights in another region of the country (I live in Huntingdon). I have a wife, and 2 young children (3 and 1), and having never really had a holiday in this country since I was a child, I wasn`t sure quite where we could take them.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

I worked and lived in the channel islands for a couple of years, beautiful weather, nice scenery, speak english, can get a day trip over the channel if you like and can get some good deals either flying with free car hire or on the ferry with the car......obviously Scotland also :).....the islands, Mull, Lewis, Tobermory, Oban the gateway to the isles or you could just do the Edinburgh tourist trap, if you do spend at least one day in Glasgow and go to the Cathedral and the Necropolis which is still my favorite place to visit.....

We spent a few days in Jersey in may, it was very nice, couple of castles, Durrel`s zoo, some museums on the rainy days.

Last year we spent a few days in Oxford, that was good, looking round some of the university buildings, the old jail, a day at Blenheim Palace.

London obviously has plenty to do.

a couple of years ago we went up to Scotland for a week, 3 days in Edinburgh, then a couple of days here in and there, again various castles and stately homes, St Andrews etc. Plenty to do in Edinburgh in 3 days, we`d happily go back again to see all the things we didn`t get chance to see. As well as obvious attractions like Edinburgh castle and Holyrood Palace, there`s the camera obscure, and enjoy the nearby countryside with a walk up to Arthur`s seat to enjoy the view.

Spent a few days in Glastonbury a couple of years ago, see the cathedral, the tor(maybe not suitable for the kids, long way to carry them I think) Wells and its Cathedral, Wookey hole.

Cardiff, again a good castle, and others near by.

Warwick, another good castle, and nearby nice towns and villages like Leamington Spa, Stratford etc.

Devon and cornwall are nice, beaches and plenty of things to see and do.

York - not got round to going there yet, but it`s on our to do list, as you can tell we like looking at old castles, stately homes etc.

The New Forest is awesome - plenty of picnic areas where any number of animals (horses, ponies, donkeys, cows, goats, even deer) can come and say hello, plus they have Poultons Park/Peppa Pig World, which is a theme park aimed squarely at YOUNGER children (no big death-defying rides) and Marwell Wildlife Park, which is a wonderful zoo near Winchester. Also Portsmouth and Southampton nearby - good shops and HMS Victory and Warrior and the Mary Rose,  And you could hop on a ferry across to the Isle of Wight. Not to mention  Beaulieu Motor Museum.

Also would recommend Windsor - see the castle etc and also Legoland a very short trip away (was Windsor Safari Park once upon a time)

Thanks for the help with this guys.

I ended up taking a trip to Warwick for a couple of days with the family (via Legoland). Whilst there we went to Warwick Castle, which was very enjoyable although like all Tussaud`s attractions they rip you off left, right and centre. Worst of all was paying £4 each for the Merlin Dragon tour, which was absolutely godawful. Such a shameless attempt to make you spend more money, and I can`t believe the BBC have put their name to it. It felt more like a pre-ride show, than an actual one.

Literally the first thing they make you do, before going in, is queue up to have your photo taken. Once you`ve had this unavoidable trap set, then you have to exit through the photo area after the show, at which point you`re called over to try and buy your picture. This wouldn`t be so bad, where it not for the main section, where a poorly animated CGI dragon talks to you in a small room, was so shoddily done. Next time, I`ll be checking Trip Advisor where many people have said the same.

Legoland was much better for the little ones, and even though its clearly not as education there`s still lots of activities to be had. My 3 year old loved it on the most part.

Out of curiousity, can anyone recommend other good castles to visit in the country? I did like how Warwick Castle had recreated the areas with waxworks and plenty of info on the living/working conditions. Would be keen to visit more castles!
