Play.com To Cease Direct Trading

Mark Oates (Reviewer) posted this on Wednesday, 9th January 2013, 16:00

Thanks to the end of Low Value Consignment Relief, Play.com will be ceasing to trade directly from March 2013, concentrating on its marketplace role.

To Call Me Dave and Whatsisname - Thank you very much, Tw*ts.

I couldn`t be more disgusted.  Play has been my go-to retailer since I started in DVDs.  They were always reliable, always got pre-orders to me on the street date or the weekend before.  They always had the best deals and gave the best indications of upcoming titles.  Now I`m stuck with a choice between Amazon who always charge top price when you factor in p&p and almost always ship on the street date; or one of the Hut group who are totally unreliable.

I used to always use play, but they ceased to be the cheapest about a year ago? And delivery isn't as fast as it used to be.

There's always another retailer Mark!

I`m finding that the price of DVDs and Blu-Rays on release is creeping back up again since the government stopped this VAT loophole in Jersey. Pain in the ass. I`m buying far less than I used to, preferring to wait for them to drop in price as they get older.

There really isn`t much to choose from with the online retailers any more and the High Street is useless.

I gave up Amazon and Play a few years back as prices were not as cheap as other means, ie just wait till the DVD is a few months old and it drops in price by half, then six months on from launch its £3.

So. I only ever get full price DVD`s at Christmas now as a present, and its not worth it, as I got TED, the talking bear film at a tenner, and it was just total tripe, supposed to be a comedy but I laughed only twice, so I handed it into British heart foundation, and someone got it at £2, a more realistic price

Haven`t used them in years. Experienced poor customer service on a few sequential orders, switched to Amazon, and have been using them almost exclusively ever since (the odd HMV/Sainsbury`s order aside). When they were a small company they were great, but they went downhill after dropping the 247 bit of their name and the TV advertising began.

It`s rubbish in that more people will be losing their jobs, but although Play were among the first companies I imported from back in the early days of DVD I don`t have any nostalgic pangs of sadness over their demise.

I think there are enough retailers around to keep the likes of Amazon honest. Sainsbury`s are among the cheapest around (downside is they are slow to deliver) and Zavvi and HMV are generally pretty reasonable, although who knows how long they`ll be around...

I think the public has to bear some of the responsibility for this though. We keep demanding cheaper and cheaper media and there`s no real retailer loyalty these days. I frequently read comments from people saying they`re going to wait until X title reaches £8 or less before buying. This is particularly true of catalogue titles, which is why they are not an attractive prospect for distributors. (Cost of restoring vs expected return etc). I remember when DVD first arrived and we were paying £18 a disc for imports and thinking it was a good price, and that was 13/14 years ago!
