washing machine question..

MADTheOgster (Elite Donator) posted this on Saturday, 15th June 2013, 19:01

hi guys,  the heating element has gone on my washer/dryer,  cant afford to fix it at the moment, so i`m just getting a cold wash.

this machine has only a cold inlet, however, the previous machine had both, & the plumbing for the hot water is still behind the machine, so my question is, would connecting the hot water into the cold inlet cause damage to the machine (in the short term) bearing in mind it`s fed by a combi boiler, so i can turn the water temp down quite a lot.

The machine will take the water in no problem however make sure you set your boiler thermostat to 40 degrees, The only problem you may have is if the WM element has gone the thermostat might of been effected also.

Exactly my thought when I read the problem but it might be ONLY the thermostat hence the cold washes.
There could be a controller issue instead and as it`s starting to get confusing let me explain:

When you turn on the machine you set the wash which also selects the temperature, normally (with most machines) they will let in the water then sit there whilst the element heats it to the correct wash temperature then wash.
In your case Ogs, you seem to get it to wash even though the temperature is still cold. Basically it should be sitting there full of water doing nothing unless you select a cold wash (unless that`s what you`re already doing).
As DK says, can`t see an issue connecting to the hot feed but you will need to lower the input temperature... 40 is a normal cotton wash but most machines use 30 as their base temp nowadays so I`d even go as low as 30 to err on the side of caution.

Still can`t get my head round it working if it`s just "load wash-programme select-go" when there`s no temperature involved.... unless the thermostat/trigger switch is jammed in the working position....?

And might also be worth checking into cheaper machines rather than repair mate, the machine we have in the kitchen now will be the last expensive one I buy, got lucky as it seemed to have a control panel fault and wouldn`t work, 1 month out of guarantee and they wanted nearly £150+vat for the part then the fitting.. managed to get it to work manually filling it with some water then draining, still no idea how that ever worked but it did!

there are a few people online that have had exactly the same problem, (house fuse blew but not the fuse in the machine itself) then when you use the washer no heat + no heat on the dryer,  the part is £40, but not recommended to fit yourself, otherwise i would have gotten the part & had a go...

saving up for a motorbike at the mo, so really dont want any other bills at the moment...

Know a few people who have gone the Chinese route for a bike so they can get their practice in before the tests. Very sensible and they don`t break the bank. And they usually get a good price for them once they move onto a bigger machine.

Good luck with the tests if you decide to do it.

And if you are on the road by Sunday come along for a sausage run! No motorways and lots of other 125s coming along.
Just google Henshaws Sausage Run. From Old Trafford over to Knaresborough.
