Page 1 of Libel case by the McCanns (Madeleine McCann case)

Once again the Madeleine McCann case has raised its head, and her mother is in court in Lisbon, over libel allegations by Former detective Goncalo Amarals book 'The truth of the lie' (see the Daily Express today for more info).

The book alleged the couple faked an abduction, and the 2 million pound 'Find Madeleine' fund was a ploy to make a fortune out of donations.

The McCanns are seeking 1 million pound in damages to their reputation from the former detective. The hearing continues.

My own opinion on the case has always been that the mother as a doctor had some powerful seditives, and overdosed Madeleine by accident tying to get her to sleep, before they went out, and the parents did cover up the case, to save their jobs as doctors.

As for the fund, well I think the cover up was more important, than making a fortune. But the story got bigger and bigger as the year went on and the McCann's were wrapped up in it.

Any thoughts on the matter?

Does the irony of expressing your thoughts immediately after noting they are suing for libel not cross your mind? :)

Writer`s Release

Last I heard in this country that there is free speech. No one is making money here on this thread, So less of the libelous.

My thought are the same as thousands of people in the UK, so there is nothing libalous about them.

We can talk what's on our mind. Maybe that's what the McCanns fear, and the reason for going after this detective.

As for killing, well if there was any, it would be by accident, as I said.

These two people (the parents) stood to lose their livelyhood of both being doctors, thus to my mind, they covered it all up.

It will be most interesting to see the outcome of the hearing.

Its ok, this hearing is doing just that.

I don't agree with Bandicoot on a lot of things, but I do on this one.  I think they overdosed her by mistake and covered it up.  I think once that had started, they had to go along with it and got sucked up in all the publicity/fundraising etc and couldn't escape once it'd started.

I also don't have a million quid to sue me for, so I'm safe!  (I like the new like, thank and dislike options by the way RJS!)

Nice to see the father staying at home to look after the kids. Might have been a good idea to do just that when the poor wee soul went missing.

Only fact out of the whole sorry and sad incident is a wee lassie is not with her family, all else is merely speculation no more and no less.

Having no money to be sued for only stops people who are suing you for money. It doesn't stop people suing you!

Libel has nothing to do with how much money you make from saying it either.

Also, we can be as liable as you for publishing your comments, so please do bear that in mind! It isn't just your own lively-hood you risk. :/

The libel case will be heard again tomorrow. It will then be adjourned until next Thursday when the court will sit again for two days. A final hearing is expected on Friday September 27. The judgment is expected to be deferred.
