Changing jobs.....need to make a quick decision.
Hello there,
I have been in my current job for over two years now and luckily it came around when I was unemployed for 11 months and on my last month of mortgage insurance.
I can walk to work in less than 15 minutes and is quite secure for the foreseeable future.
What I don't like about it is the continental shifts, sometimes I start work on a Friday night and the money is not that great but enough for me to live on and still have some spending money. Also the job is really boring doing the same thing every day for 12 hours with no interesting or intelligent conversation. I actually feel like my brain cells are melting away and have not kept up with any of my interests since I started there.
My old boss phoned me up yesterday saying that my old workplace where i had worked for 14 years before being made redundant was booming again and asked me if I would be interested in coming back.
My old workplace is a 40 minute walk away and has much better pay, about £500+ extra a month but I would need to go back working 6 days a week in a very dirty and noisy environment and with a lot more pressure on me. But all my workmates there are actually friends that I socialise with when I have time off and there was always a good laugh there.
I have to go in tomorrow to see my old boss and he will let me know what's happening.
I am expecting him to offer me the job tomorrow.
I am more worried about job security more than anything, when I got made redundant my workplace was really busy then all of a sudden they payed off a full shift but I know this can happen anywhere even in the secure job I have now.
I just can't make up my mind :-/

You never know what tomorrow may bring, but I'll choose the vitality of my brain cells over zombifying routine every time!

You sound almost as if you've made your mind up. If it were me and I had the opportunity to leave a soul-destroying job that I didn't enjoy and didn't stimulate me for one where the work/company was better (and a known quantity) I'd definitely take them up on it (especially if the money is better). The old me wouldn't, but I have done enough hateful jobs over the years to learn when to cut my losses.

If you are going back to see your old boss, even though they made you redundant before, then you HAVE made your mind up.
You must definitely want that job back, with more money, and a bit of thinking behind it.
There is no job security now, Thatcher's legacy made sure of that, and Governments since have just followed in her footsteps.
Just remember if you take your old job back, that loyalty is nothing now, and if a better job turns up in the future with even better pay and conditions, just do the dirty on them for a change, and leave.
Sorry, but this is my 30 years of contract worker mentality, it pays by the hour, gets the job done correctly, expects no favours, and there no loyalty to no-one except myself. Sad but true.

going back seems sensible to me from what you've said. we spend most of our lives asleep or at work, so makes sense to make work as enjoyable as possible when the opportunity arises :)
Hope the chat with your old boss went well.

I think you may have to really think about the pro n cons, and good luck.

Thanks for the advice
Had an interview with my old boss and he more or less said i have the job but don't hand in my notice until i get an official letter through the door.
Going back to my old place and seeing people happy to see me and doing stimulating work has made me realise how bad my current workplace is and realising i am quite an unhappy person now.
Its worrying to think how i could end up doing this same repetitive job for a few more years.
Hopefully everything goes well and i get an official job offer through the door soon.
Cheers.

I hope you get your official letter soon!
I'd go back to yhe old job if you enjoy it, nothing worse than a dreadfully boring job you don't enjoy!
