Pushchairs on public transport

dkuk2000 (Elite) posted this on Thursday, 4th September 2014, 19:37

Before anybody starts to bash me I have a 3 year old who still use's a pushchair now and again.
I don't drive so I have to use public transport (Buses) for work here in Bristol.
Over the past couple of years First Bus have started introducing Buses with access for wheel chair users, However during the rush hour on my route It seems there are no wheel chair users but many Parents that have the extremely large push chairs.
Only going back a few years ago parents would collapse their push chairs when boarding a bus however these days they seem to think it's their god given right to board a bus during rush hour traffic regardless if there iis room or not !!!.
I wouldn't normally rant but some mother was adamant that she could just stand at the front of the bus with her huge push chair blocking the exit.

modern pushchairs/buggies/strollers/prams are v different aren't they though. those old ones used to fold up and take up about as much room as a golf umbrella

Ours folded up takes up about 1/2 as much room as it does when out, so still quite a chunk. I haven't tried taking ours on the bus, but I have no idea how I'd manage to get the kids out, get them to stand still, fold up the buggy etc, if said bus was full of ppl. besides, the section under the seats is usually full of stuff so couldn't fold it up anyway! I think we'd take up more room if we folded it up

In fairness we have Arriva buses up here and it's both wheelchair and pram access and the understanding is that only one per bus unless it's collapsible.

Never seen anyone argue about this in the last 8 years either...

They do the same
Here. The space is markes as a designated wheelchair
Space, but may be used by buggies if it's not needed for one. School rush hits amd the bus is completely full (literally standing room and squished up) and some blithering idiot tries to get a buggu on, unfolded! A lot of the mothers (and it usually is mothers before anyone says I'm being sexist) seem to think the drivers are there to be ignored/shouted at/spat on/bitched about so the drivers just let them fihht it out!

I think there should be a buggy ban at certain times of the day.
