MP3

devon excile (Harmless) posted this on Thursday, 23rd November 2000, 13:19

I`ve got about £200 to spend, and having looked through the forums it seems that the Scan 2000 and Aiwa 370 are pretty popular at the moment.

I`m interested in watching r1 and r2 films, but I also would like to link the DVD player up to an amp so I can play mp3s through my stereo. Which is the best player for mp3? Also does the player show Artist and title, or do you select the track from the filenames (ie 01-Oasis-~1)?? Can you shuffle? etc etc.

Any thoughts/advice would be much appreciated.

Aiwa 370 answers to your questions (in order):

Aiwa 370
think it can display the artist and title, but I have no mp3 discs.. ask jezebabe
and yep too
yep for the shuffle as well ( i think..)
However filenames are limited to 14 characters
characters other than uppercase letters, underscore ( _ ) and numbers may not be displayed
elapsed playing time on the player window may be incorrect
tracks may not play in the order recorded unless prefixed "01" "02" etc.
and the poor thing can only handle discs with up to TWO HUNDRED AND FIFTY SIX TRACKS!!!!

So if ya got a 257 track or more disc, it might not play it!!!

Thanks Jimbo.

I`d be keen to know if any DVD players can handle artist and track titles with mp3s. Does anyone have any experience with playing mp3s on their DVD?

Okay.. it shows the directory folder you`re playing from with the track list below.
(Name the folder as the Artist, then the tracks for what you ask)

However, I just made a quick 20 track disc, and for example, named the disc "Various_MP3"

The display reads "Variou_1" (maybe cause of the underscore?)
Track number 20 was named "20 SALTWATER" and shows as "20 SALT_1"
Maybe I`m wrong but I count 9 characters there and it`s supposed to support 14?

A minor glitch however..I shall just name give future discs shorter track names! :o)

And the quality of playback?
Makes my telly sound like a decent hifi amp!

Seriously! You have GOTTA hear the quality to believe it!!
(I`m scared to put this through my Kenwood M85.. I might be blown away!)

I can confirm that the SCAN SC2000 does show artist and title on MP3 tracks but that the display is currently limited to 8 charicters (apparantly a future software upgrade will fix this).

IT is also very good at playing Region 1 and Region 2 Disc`s (which after all is a DVD players main purpose).

Cheers Vic
