Page 1 of Taping a region 1 DVD
Hack Help Forum
If I try to tape a region 1 DVD, when play it back the picture is black and white and messed up. I am assuming that this is because of the NTSC format.
Is there any way around this? Or will it play back ok on a video that does NTSC playback?

RE: Taping a region 1 DVD
one word MACROVISON :P
It`s nothing to do with Macrovision. Most PAL VCRs will *NOT* record a NTSC or PAL-60Hz signal correctly, which rules out recording R1 DVDs in most cases.
To do that, you need either of the following:
1) A DVD player which can output a true 50Hz PAL signal from a NTSC DVD (e.g. a Samsung 709).
2) A VCR which can record a NTSC signal (for example one of the Thomson models).
(Note that a VCR having NTSC playback *does not* necessarily mean that it can record in NTSC.)
