Hack Help Forum
Hi folks. I`m looking to buy a DVD player/recorder, and when I do, I want to watch DVDs from various regions (I live in area 2, but also want to watch DVDs from areas 1, 4, etc...)
I`ve heard that the area of a DVD player can only be changed four or five times, and then that`s it. Is this true? can DVD players not be programmed to accept DVDs from all areas?
RE: Is it true that...?
Philips 880 / 890 both multiregional hackable.......see this site.
"I`ve heard that the area of a DVD player can only be changed four or five times, and then that`s it. Is this true?"
No, that`s false. That only applies to computer DVD-ROM drives with RPC-2 protection. (Even then, it`s usually possible to flash the firmware in the drive to get around the restriction.) It doesn`t apply to stand-alone DVD players, so ignore it.
When buying a player, make sure you get one which has a handset hack for multi-region (see the "Multi Region Hacks" section of this site), or which has been pre-modified for multi-region.

Thanks a lot for that. Now I have a better idea of what to look for.
