Does anyone know of any possible hacks that are available for the Toshiba 2109 DVD Player.

No handset hacks - you`ll need to get it chipped or multiregion activated by a dealer.

Chip mod usually has Macrovision off too.

You need to be aware that almost all 2109 mods are not RCE compatible.
(There are only 2 companies that I know of that offer the mod that does work with RCE discs)

(Almost missed this after Steves marketing splurge)

RCE = Regional Coding Enhancement

Its a technique used on a few discs where the region checking is moved from the player to the disc. Usually a player will refuse to play a disc if the region does not match the players own. RCE changes this by having a piece of script in the menu that checks to see if the player can view region 1 (at the moment) discs - if it can`t then the menu takes a different branch from the `view the film` one and displays a `you can`t play this` screen.

This form of disc has been around for quite a while but Auto only mods tended to not fall victim to it as usually they would read the discs region code and hence report it correctly. RCE is an enhancement to the normal `branching` disc in that the disc also `lies` to the player :-) It does this by having the region code 0 for the disc. Region 0 discs are meant to be playable in all machines however the menu is still coded for region 1 play. The auto mods that set themselves to the disc region now have a problem in how they handle a region 0 disc. Some (e.g. Pioneer) leave the player in the last region loaded [so you could get around it by playing a region 1 disc first] others (e.g. Samsung) play without problem as they didn`t bother reading the disc region...the Toshiba (and Sony) though have problems in that they are fooled by the disc region 0 trick.

Recently mods have started appearing for the Toshibas that work with RCE discs

Hi I`ve got a tosh 2109 that has been moded and I tried Hollow man,
put the disk in the machine and close the draw, turn machine to standby
then turn it back on but keep your finger on the play button on the remote control and it will play the film. this worked for me.

regards Wally

Hi

I too have a Toshiba 2109 that is chipped, and Hollow Man refused to play on it. However, after banging the buttons on my remote in frustration, I finally found a method to play it. Try this and see if it works for you -

Place the disk in the machine and at the refusal screen, press the stop button on the remote. Now press Random and pick title random. Press play, and it should start playing random scenes. Keep skipping through until you get one that begins ‘Title 1’. Press Menu and you can play the disk as normal and access all the special features. For some reason, pressing Menu when it is playing all other scenes, e.g. the extra features, doesn’t work and you are faced with that dreaded refusal screen again. It would be interesting to see if this works on all RCE titles, or on other machines that have problems.

Hope that helps

Gillian
