Low Volume on Philips 701

richb (Harmless) posted this on Wednesday, 11th July 2001, 22:56

I have just aquired this (my first) machine and am very happy with it as it runs VCDs no problem and also music CDRs, but am unsure about the volumes I`m getting. Sone Wega sounds fine, but DVD sounds muted by comparison through TV surround sound system. Have connected via Scart. Am I doing it wrong? I have tried phonos from DVD to Hi-Fi amp and independant speakers and also phonos from TV to Hi-Fi amp(with DVD then going through Scart)and independant speakers, but still feel that the DVD is muted compared to TV, Video or just plain old music system. Is there a `fix` for this or is it just that I`m missing some salient point as a newbie? Any advice or offers of assistance appreciated.

Sorry Eric, I haven`t done the remote hack yet. I want to sort this one step at a time and only currently have access to region 2 dvds. If you have any good ideas about where to get region 1 gear I`d be interested for the future, but I still feel that my sound is in need of attention.

downmixing from DD5.1 to DD2.0 (surround) tends to muffle the sound.

Also dvd players have their audio output levels set at the correct reference level. Problem is that most other equipment (mainly tvs) are set at the wrong level.
