No, it can`t play MP3s I`m afraid.

I`m not sure what you mean by "cgg" - do you mean CD+Gs (Compact Disc With Graphics) like for karaoke and stuff? The 709 doesn`t play those either.

not to burst your bubble but,
as a fellow 709 owner i consider my self lucky that it can play most vcds and dvds
without overheating first.
and then there is the layer change problem with the matrix for example.
my machine is region 1.
