Chipping requires soldering, but there are many companies which will do this for you. Prices range from £50 upwards for a fitted chip, or around £20 if you buy a chip to fit yourself. Once fitted it`s a simple matter to change the region.

Firmware doesn`t require soldering, but you still have to open your player to fit it. If you go to www.709online.com forums you`ll find folk who will sell you a programmed firmware EPROM for £15.

Once you have the 5.02C EPROM, you have to open the player (unplug it first!), remove 5.02E, plug in 5.02C, then connect to the mains again and hack your player to multi-region ("region 9") using this method:

Once you`ve done the hack, unplug the player, put the 5.02E firmware back in, put the lid back on, power up and test. Your player should now be multi-region and capable of playing all discs.

Note that the hack is "semi-permanent" - it will remain if you switch off or unplug the player, but will not survive a "cold reset". If you ever reset your player (by holding down Play and Stop until the language screen appears), you will have to go through the hack process with 5.02C again.
