I`m new to this hacking game. If I try a hack and it doesn`t work will that effect the ability to play the original region 2 DVD`s ?

No you will be able to play Region 2 dvds whatever, all the hack is a code typed into the machine that changes the settings to allow Region 1 dvds to be played.

I belive that some people have had a go at a hack and it has failed and caused problems but like anything really there is always a chance it might go wrong(Very Slight Chance). It is defiantly worth trying to hack.
