Scart leads and the plating of gold.........

daniel22 (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Sunday, 14th July 2002, 10:46

I have a bog standard scart lead ( all pins ) that i use with my 32 inch sony TV however there is some, um how do i put this......jagginess and colour leak in the picture, which indeed does look better when i mess about with contrast and sharpness........now, will buying and using a gold-plated scart make any sort of recognisable difference, and yes i am quite anal about this sort of thing (hey arent we all)..... anyway is it worth it?

it isnt like terrible but a little bit noticable, i notice it, my g/f doesnt....know what i mean?? :)

(and yes the signal is RGB and its in the right scart socket)

thanks.

While the gold contact will give you a better electrical contacts, and a cleaner picture, what you are seeing might also be down to a poorly shielded cable - you say it is a bog-standard cable after all.

I had similar problems with a standard cable that came with a piece of kit - it was a fairly thin cable that was plagued by interference.

Just from my own experience I reckon it is well worth the extra expense and getting better quality leads. The good lady and me certainly noticed a difference. £13-15 from Argos if memory serves me well is money well spent.

Also have a look at the BTech ribbon scarts from http://www.beyondhifi.net - 1.5m £16.61 delivered, and very good (look pretty, too!)
