urgent help please;plasma & sky question

alex Berks (Harmless) posted this on Sunday, 1st September 2002, 10:56

Hi everyone,

I have just got a 37" Panasonic plasma but did not buy the £500 analog tuner because my vcr will do the same. My problem is that the playstation and usual tv stations are not very clear, I was told to get sky digital because it is still cheaper than the £500 tuner and you get more channels. My plasma is really clear with my 747 pioneer dvd using the rgb output but if i tried svideo or the yellow video output rca the picture was crap again. Would sky be that much clear and where would it connect to? The plasma rgb is used by my dvd and the only other spare plugs are svideo, yellow video out and vga, all of these are really bad picture quality and the cable to convert rgb to vga is £250 but "worth it" so the plasma shop says.

I have already spent over £250 on cables for this sodding plasma and £300 for sky to be fitted tomorrow, is this the only way to get clear tv stations or am i being conned?

Please help before they fit sky tomorrow!!!

Many thanks

A confussed plama owner

Best quality piccie from $ky will be via RGB ; therefore, you need an RGB switcher/splitter. Manually-switched ones are available from Maplins, Argos & others. Lektropacks & various other places do (more expensive) intelligent auto-switching types.
Ensure any splitter/switcher you buy DOES do RGB - some only do composite video.
I use an Argos-purchased manual switch (£10 in their sale a month ago) for switching between DVD & digital satellite ; it`s a B-Tech BT22 and clearly says on the case that it`s RGB & S-video compatible.

The Sky Box will pass RGB through from the video port to the main out port when the box is off (I have a 42" Fujitsu Plamsa, and run my GameCube through my Sky+ box).

I use the `Plasma VGA` box (Scart RGB to VGA, Basicly just a line doubler) from JS Tech ( http://www.rgbtosvideo.com/ ) he`s just started to do an RGB to Component box now as well. £120 quid, and well worth it, the picture quility is excellent.

Thanks for the reply.

Did you notice a good improvement with the vga cable?

My playstation is poor quality and the screen jumps, is this because it`s connected to the vcr by scart and from the vcr scart to the plasma by the yellow rca video cable? Will the JS cable cure these problems and should the vcr and/or playstation run through the digibox by scart?

Thanks for any replies because no companies seem to care about the quality of a £4000+ plasma display and think that svideo or video rca is good enough and it ISNT!
